UPDATE: I don’t know anything about weapons but I have an odd feeling that these may turn out to be legal. Also, I question if the gun free schools law included universities, or this location, an off-campus facility run by the university. This may be a molehill, not a mountain.

Authorities arrested an RIT student Tuesday and charged him with felony weapons counts. Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Jonathan Hackenburg, 22, of New Jersey around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Police say Rochester Institute of Technology security received a call from another student claiming to hear the sound of someone racking a gun in a neighboring dorm room at the RIT Inn and Conference Center in Henrietta. The hotel doubles as housing for RIT students.
When authorities entered Hackenburg’s room, they found two assault rifles. One weapon is a Stag-15 rifle. The other, a Romanian made AR-15 style rifle.
In addition to the rifles, authorities found four 30-round magazines and more than two hundred rounds of ammunition. Some of the ammunition was found in the student’s vehicle.
Hackenburg told authorities he has a permit from his hometown in Hackettstown, New Jersey to purchase firearms. The senior RIT engineering student told authorities he has spent a lot of time working on guns and rebuilding them.
Hackenburg was arraigned in Henrietta Town Court Tuesday night. He’s charged with two counts of criminal ossession of a weapon in the 3rd degree (D felonies) and criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree for possessing a firearm on school property.
He remains in the Monroe County jail on $15,000 cash bail, $30,000 bond.
RIT officals notified students immediately with a crime alert. It is the school’s protocol.

A Rochester Institute of Technology student was arrested and suspended from classes today after Monroe County sheriff’s deputies and campus safety officers discovered two illegal guns in his room.
RIT Spokesman Robert Finnerty said police were alerted to the possibility that a student could have gun in a room at the RIT Inn and Conference Center after an employee there heard a suspicious sound that was not a shot.
Officers found two illegal guns that the student said he had just assembled, but no ammunition was in the room, Finnerty said. Deputies later found ammunition in the student’s vehicle.
Deputies have arrested the student, whom Finnerty did not identify. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. John Helfer confirmed a student had been found with guns and arrested. He said he was preparing a statement with more information to be released later today.
Finnerty said the student has been suspended. Students, faculty and staff were notified of the arrest about 5:30 p.m.

One wonders where one can find one of those Romanian AR15-style rifles, too.
If he bought his Stag-15 legally in New Jersey, then it’s probably in a legal configuration.
The thirty-round magazines (if they are in fact 30 rounders and not the type that have the length, but a stop inside to prevent them from loading more than 10 rounds - and are unmodified) could get him in trouble with the law.
The GFS Act simply says schools - which leaves plenty of wiggle room. I expect the kid is hosed, especially since at the moment, no one is going to want to appear lax.
He needs a good lawyer to string things along until the furor dies down, otherwise the system is more likely to use a 10ton block where a 12 oz hammer would suffice.
When you name an entry, “Virginia Tech Copycat?” with a question mark at the end, you are basically saying that he is a “copycat.” This is a Fox News tactic. I know that you’re not saying it, really. You’re posing a question. It’s a very misleading way of writing.
I’m disappointed that so many news organizations and people have started to imply their opinions on the news in this fashion.
Sigh.
