Trans Gendered Teacher

Democrat & Chronicle

(September 13, 2006) — BATAVIA — About 44 parents gathered Tuesday night to hear about a high school science teacher who is dressing as a woman to prepare for sex reassignment surgery.

It’s the second time Batavia City Schools officials have met with parents since announcing that the teacher would start the school year as a woman. The first meeting drew more than 150 people.

People in Batavia appear to be handling the situation well, said Superintendent Richard Stutzman Jr. “The majority of the negative comments are coming from all over the country,” he said before Tuesday’s meeting

Many people from outside of the state do not understand that the teacher’s condition — gender identity disorder — is considered a disability and protected under New York law, he said. “The district did what the district had to do,” said Stutzman.

I wish this individual had been given just a little more privacy. I think it could have been handled far more delicately and respectfully. It’s high school, so the questions can be answered for the students without a lot of kerfluffle.
