IA Soldiers seize weapons in Sadr City

Iraqi Army Soldiers seized numerous weapons caches in the Sadr City district of Baghdad June 25.

Iraqi Army Soldiers with the 3rd Brigade, 1st Iraq Army Division uncovered 11, 82 mm rounds and nine fuses in a school courtyard at approximately 7 a.m.

At approximately 11 a.m., Soldiers from the same unit discovered two AK-47 magazines and one tank scope. They also found two 82 mm rounds, five anti-tank mines, six 60 mm rounds, 11 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, 30 AK-47 rounds and command wire approximately one hour later.

Soldiers with the 3rd Brigade, 1st Iraq Army Division found a cache behind a mosque consisting of four explosively formed projectiles.

Since May 20, the Iraqi Army has uncovered 205 weapons and munitions caches, including more than 150 improvised explosive devices and 100 EFPs.

ISF continue to clear Amarah of munitions

Iraqi Security Forces discovered numerous munitions during Operation Basha’er as Salaam in Amarah.

The caches, found in homes, businesses and public areas throughout the city from June 19-22 totaled more than 1,700 mortar rounds, 873 mines, 445 artillery rounds, 347 rocket propelled grenades, 267 rockets, 227 missile launchers, 109 improvised explosive devices, 74 grenades; 35, 122 mm rounds; 27 explosively formed projectiles and 14 missiles.

The ISF led the combined effort, both planning and executing Operation Basha’er as Salaam. ISF located a total of 117 weapons caches and detained more than 63 criminals since the operation began.

A four-day amnesty period was allowed prior to the operation for citizens to turn in munitions not counted in the above list.

The citizens’ cooperation with the ISF was integral in the success of the mission.

“The operation has been a great success,” said Col. Charles A. Flynn, commander of 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. “The Iraqi Police and Iraqi Army are out in force. They are doing the hard and dangerous work to detain criminals and remove Special Groups from this area. At the same time, they’re providing humanitarian assistance to the citizens of Amarah and creating a safer environment to call home.”

As operations continue, the ISF is providing humanitarian aid through the delivery of Halal meals and water to the citizens of Amarah.

ISF seizes three major caches in Amarah operation

Iraqi Security Forces seized three major caches in the ongoing Operation Basha’er as-Salaam in Amarah, Iraq June 19-20.

The ISF have discovered 19 caches so far during the operation.

The first cache was discovered in a cemetery outside of the city, which contained more than 240 RPG warheads, approximately 250 mortar rounds and more than 675 anti-tank mines. Several rocket launchers were also found in the cache as well as explosively formed projectile components.

A second cache was discovered in a militia headquarters building in the downtown area of Amarah. The cache consisted of EFPs, 60 mm rounds, more than 50 82 mm rounds, 122 mm rounds, and more than 40 155 mm rounds. Several homemade bombs and anti-tanks rounds were discovered in the cache.

Iraqi Security Forces also discovered another cache consisting of 82 mm mortar tubes, approximately 70 82 mm mortar rounds and approximately 100 60 mm mortar rounds.

ISF clear insurgents out of Amarah

raqi Security Forces started clearing operations in Amarah June 19 following a four-day amnesty period for weapons turn in.

The operation, planned and led by Iraqi Security Forces, is focused on routing out criminals and militants in the area.

Coalition forces are providing advisory assistance to Iraqi Security Forces.

During the amnesty period, 17 artillery rounds and a machine gun were turned into Iraqi Security Forces.

A militia headquarters was seized by Iraqi Security Forces after a weapons cache was discovered containing 676 mines, 249 mortar rounds, 241 rocket-propelled grenades and four homemade-rocket launchers.

In operations surrounding Amarah, a total of 273 mortar rounds were discovered, along with numerous other accelerants.

It looks like the Iraqis and our guys have been on a collection spree in Baghdad. Collecting, not fighting, is a very good thing and an encouraging sign that the people of Baghdad want peace back.

Iraqi Army soldiers seized a weapons cache June 5 in Sadr City, marking the 100th cache the soldiers have seized since Operation Peace began May 20.

Iraqi Army soldiers from the 9th and 11th Iraqi Army Divisions are patrolling Sadr City to help protect citizens from the violence of Special Groups criminals that are operating in the neighborhoods.

IA soldiers have seized 114 improvised explosive devices, 60 explosively formed projectiles, 295 mortar rounds, 242 rocket propelled grenades, 163 homemade hand grenades,123 grenades, 109 anti-tank mines,11 rockets, six helicopter rockets, four anti-aircraft rockets, 21 tank rounds, 367 AK-47s, 41 artillery rounds, 39 RPG launchers, 23 mortar tubes, 11 rocket rails, 10 RPKs, six PKCs, seven machine guns, 24 rifles, 22 Siminov sniper rifles, eight pistols, an anti-aircraft gun, 62 kilograms of TNT, a crate of TNT, seven sticks of TNT, 20 one-liter cans of TNT, a box of TNT with ball bearings, other homemade explosives, bomb-making materials and a government truck.

“The Iraqi Army and its soldiers are true professionals and are diligently striving to safeguard the Iraqi people,” said Col. Allen Batschelet, chief of staff of Multi-National Division – Baghdad and the 4th Infantry Division. “In less than a month, they have removed 100 caches of deadly weapons and munitions from the Sadr City District of Baghdad alone. That in itself is a remarkable accomplishment.”

Iraqi Army soldiers seized weapons and munitions in the Sadr City district of Baghdad June 6 in their continuing efforts to improve security in the area.

The IA soldiers with 3rd Brigade, 1st IA Division, seized a BKC machine gun, 500 BKC rounds and a grenade at approximately 5:30 a.m.

At approximately the same time, soldiers with 3rd Bde., 1st IA Div., seized a cache consisting of four improvised-explosive devices, two 155 mm rounds, two sniper rifles, a sniper scope, a rocket-propelled grenade anti-tank round, two RPG-7 anti-personnel rounds, a 60 mm mortar tube and a RPG-7 launcher.

Soldiers from the same unit also seized a RPG-7 scope at approximately 6 a.m.
