McCain and Picking a Vice President
Power Line does another analysis of the potential VP candidates that McCain has to select from. Gov. Palin is not mentioned. Also not mentioned is the elephant in the room. McCain is old enough that we MUST make the assumption that he may die before the end of his term. His selection of a running mate should not only be based on what states the candidate can deliver but his or her preparedness to become President if necessary. That should be a criteria for any such selection but almost never is. In McCain’s case, picking someone who won’t hurt the ticket or who could deliver a given state ought to be second to the pick’s qualifications to be President. Edwards did not deliver for Al Gore. Why Sarah Palin?

The selection of Alaska’s governor, Sarah Palin, to be the Republican Vice Presidential candidate has created a firestorm in political circles. It demonstrates the speed at which news and opinion proliferate in the electronic world we live in. Many commentators on the right and left will have their say about Governor Palin. Much pontificating will be voiced about her qualifications or lack thereof for the office. Perhaps it would be useful to look at some past Vice Presidents, and history, to establish a frame of reference for the discussion.
