38 terrorists killed this week.

Coalition forces killed six armed militants and detained 12 suspected militants during operations Monday [November 24 2008] to disrupt the Hizb-e-Islami Gulbuddin, or HIG, and Haqqani terrorist networks in Kapisa and Paktika provinces.

An operation in Tagab District, Kapisa province, targeted an HIG commander known to traffic large-scale weapons used to conduct attacks in the region against civilians, Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition forces. Intelligence also indicated the commander planned and coordinated recent attacks in the area that have killed and injured civilians, ANSF and Coalition forces.

During the operation in Tagab, Coalition forces received small-arms fire from multiple armed militants attempting to maneuver on Coalition forces. Coalition forces responded with small-arms fire, killing five militants.

A search of the compound found AK-47s and other military style equipment which were destroyed to prevent future use. Coalition forces detained seven suspected militants. They also provided protection for 11 women and 18 children during the operation.

In Ziruk District, Paktika province, Coalition forces killed one armed militant and detained five suspected militants during an operation targeting a known Haqqani subcommander who is believed to facilitate the movement of weapons and foreign fighters into the region.

As Coalition forces entered the targeted building, they were immediately engaged by an armed militant. Coalition forces responded with small-arms fire, killing him. Another militant was found holding an explosive device detonator in his hand, but he decided to surrender.

Coalition forces killed ten armed militants, and detained four suspected militants during operations to thwart the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist networks in Paktia and Paktika provinces, Tuesday {November 25 2008].

The operation in Paktia province targeted a senior Taliban commander in the Zormat district – believed to act as a liaison between the al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorist networks, assisting with the movement of foreign fighters into Afghanistan. During the operation Coalition forces were engaged by small-arms fire from multiple militants, some of whom where barricaded inside the compound. Coalition forces returned fire to protect the force and other innocent civilians in the vicinity. Five armed militants were killed during the operation.

In Sabori district, Coalition forces killed five armed militants and detained four suspected militants in an operation that targeted a Haqqani sub-commander. The targeted militant is responsible for planning and conducting attacks against Coalition forces in the region. Intelligence suggests this militant also facilitates the movement of weapons and supplies used by terrorist to conduct attacks against innocent civilians, GIRoA and Coalition forces.

As the force approached the targeted compound they received small-arms fire from two armed militants attempting to maneuver on the force. Coalition forces returned fire, killing both. The force then received small-arms fire from militants inside the compound. Adhering to Coalition procedures, designed to protect innocent civilians inside the building, the force called for all individuals to exit the building and surrender. Eight women and eleven children exited the building unharmed and were moved to a safe location. Continuing to receive fire from inside the building, the force engaged the militants with small-arms fire killing three additional militants. A search of the building revealed multiple weapons.

Coalition forces killed 15 militants, and detained six suspected militants during an early morning raid in Anizai, Zhari district, Kandahar province, Nov. 26.

Coalition forces were clearing a compound known to be an IED command and control node when they were fired upon. Coalition forces returned fire with small arms weapons killing 15 insurgents and detained six.

“We will continue to support the Afghan people by seeking and disrupting militant networks,” said Col. Jerry O’Hara, U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesperson.

No Coalition forces or civilian casualties were reported.

Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition forces killed seven militants today [November 27 2008] and uncovered three caches containing drugs and improvised explosive device-making materials during a clearing operation in Nahr Surkh District, Helmand province.

Militants fired on ANSF and Coalition forces with machine-gun and rocket-propelled grenade fire. ANSF and Coalition forces responded with small-arms and supporting fires, killing seven.

ANSF and Coalition forces searched the area and found a cache of bombing-making materials that included control wire, metal and homemade explosives; a cache of 12 mortar rounds; and a cache of 175 pounds of opium, which was destroyed.

During the operation, the combined forces protected more than 300 local villagers from enemy fire. No ANSF, Coalition forces or civilian casualties have been reported.

Five al-Qaeda terrorists killed

Coalition forces killed five terrorists, destroyed a foreign terrorist hideout site and detained 13 suspected terrorists in operations around Iraq Sunday and Monday [June 8-9 2008].

Detainee reporting led Coalition forces to a foreign terrorist hideout site in a remote area of northwest Iraq Monday. Immediately upon their arrival, Coalition forces received heavy fire from a fortified enemy position. Responding in self-defense, Coalition forces returned fire and called for supporting aircraft. Secondary explosions erupted from the target buildings, indicating weapons and bomb materials inside. Five terrorists were confirmed dead in the engagement. Coalition forces also discovered multiple suicide vests and heavy machine guns at the site, which were safely destroyed with the hideout site.

Using information from an operation June 5, Coalition forces targeted members of a terrorist bombing network Monday in Bayji, about 100 kilometers south of Mosul, and detained five suspected terrorists.

In Mosul on Monday, Coalition forces captured an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq bomber and one additional suspected terrorist.

About 100 kilometers north of Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a man believed to be the al-Qaeda in Iraq ‘emir’ of Tikrit. The man, who was detained Sunday with three additional suspected terrorists, allegedly replaced a terrorist who was killed during an operation April 26.

Sunday in Baghdad, Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists while targeting a man who allegedly operates multiple bombing cells in the city.

Basra Badguys Bumped Off

Iraqi Security Forces, advised by U.S. Special Forces, killed seven criminal members and detained 16 others during three separate operations in Basra directed by the Government of Iraq April 3.

Iraqi Special Operations Forces captured a suspected Special Groups leader who has been rallying criminal members in Basra to fight against Coalition forces.

Intelligence reports have linked the man to the kidnapping and murder of Iraqi Army and ISOF soldiers. He is also believed to be involved in oil smuggling and foreign fighter networks.

During the operation, ISOF received heavy small-arms fire and two Coalition force vehicles struck improvised explosive devices. One IED temporarily disabled a vehicle while the other IED was ineffective. ISOF killed five armed fighters and detained 10 others during the operation.

Hillah Iraqi Special Weapons and Tactics team conducted an operation to deny insurgent operations in Basra. During the operation, the team came under small-arms attack and returned fire while a Coalition force aircraft provided close-air support. Two armed individuals who were firing on ISWAT were killed. Three others were detained.

In a third operation in Basra, an Iraqi Emergency Response Unit captured two suspected members of a criminal cell linked to an ambush attempt against U.S. SF soldiers April 2. Three other suspects are being held for further questioning.

ISF, CF take fight to terrorists

Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers killed 8 terrorists in a series of attacks March 27 in Baghdad.

At 1:45 p.m., Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, were patrolling in Adhamiyah when one of their vehicles was struck by a rocket-propelled Grenade. Five minutes later, the patrol was attacked by small-arms fire. The Soldiers returned the attack with precision fire and killed one terrorist. One U.S. Soldier received a minor wound, but continued the mission.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, killed two terrorists who engaged them with small arms fire in Mansour at approximately 3 p.m.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., a team from 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, engaged and killed a terrorist who was controlling indirect fire on the northern edge of Sadr City.

In New Baghdad, a vehicle from 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, was struck by an improvised-explosive device at 5:20 p.m. The patrol positively identified the trigger man, engaged and killed the terrorist.

In Kadamiyah, Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 502 Infantry Regiment, reported a terrorists who fired a RPG at a building, which set it on fire at 5:40 p.m. As the Soldiers moved in to investigate, terrorists fired an additional RPG round and small-arms fire at their patrol. One Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle was struck by an RPG, however, there were no injuries to the team inside. Soldiers returned fire and killed three terrorists.

Iraqi Security Forces, Coalition forces target terrorists

Baghdad soldiers killed 26 terrorists during operations March 27 in Baghdad.

While patrolling in Adhamiyah, soldiers from 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment were attacked by small arms fire. The soldiers returned fire in self-defense, killing five terrorists and wounding an additional five terrorists. The wounded were treated and detained by Iraqi National Police.

Later, soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, reported receiving indirect fire at a combat outpost in New Baghdad, and immediately following the initial attack, soldiers were attacked with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Coalition forces returned fire and killed two terrorists.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, also came under a small arms fire attack while patrolling north of Baghdad. One terrorist was killed in the engagement.

Soldiers from 2-16 Inf. Regt. killed three terrorists in New Baghdad. The ground force was conducting a dismounted patrol when they saw the suspects, who were armed with illegal weapons. Perceiving hostile intent, the soldiers engaged the men, killing three.

Soldiers from 1-2 SCR were attacked by small arms fire by two terrorists while patrolling on the outskirts of Sadr City. An air weapons team in a rotary wing aircraft conducting surveillance positively identified the terrorists and killed them.

In Kadhamiyah, Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, were attacked while manning a checkpoint in the area. An air weapons team flying a rotary wing aircraft was called in to assist the ground force. The air weapons team fired one hellfire missile was fired, killing three terrorists. Thirty minutes later, the checkpoint came under a second, heavier attack by terrorists. The air weapons team engaged with 30mm rounds, killing an additional 10 terrorists.

Iraqi Security Forces, U.S. Special Forces engage criminal elements in Hillah, al-Kut

Hillah’s Iraqi Special Weapons and Tactics unit, advised by U.S. Special Forces, engaged Special Groups criminals in Hillah, killing 14 and wounding 20 March 26.

Criminals armed with AK-47 assault rifles, rocket propelled grenades and automatic machine guns attacked two companies of Hillah SWAT as they were securing a road intersection. As a firefight developed, a U.S. Special Forces team arrived and, fighting alongside SWAT, began engaging the armed individuals.

The criminal group broke contact after delivering intense RPG and automatic weapons fire, and was seen by an Air Weapons Team regrouping in three groups of 20 to 30 men near a mosque.

The AWT, from 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, reported the armed individuals were maneuvering back toward SWAT and the U.S. SF team, and, due to the hostile intent of the act, engaged the threat from the air. One Hellfire missile was fired, killing five.

After the strike, the AWT reported the remaining group of individuals dispersed and were no longer a threat.

Nine Hillah SWAT team members were killed during the firefight. Two additional SWAT team members were injured and treated by a U.S. SF medic.

Also March 26 in Al Kut, an Iraqi Special Weapons and Tactics unit advised by U.S. SF conducted a combined presence patrol to counter recent violence in the area. The patrol took small-arms and RPG fire in the Old Izza and Karamiyah districts. Both times, the patrol returned fire suppressing the enemy fighters.

As the patrol left the Old Izza and Karamiyah districts, they linked up with Iraqi Police and 8th Division Iraqi Army Scouts. The group then patrolled the Sharkiyah district, also receiving small-arms fire from a vehicle with four armed individuals. The patrol engaged the vehicle, killing two individuals.

After eliminating the threat in the area, the patrol departed for the Al Kut SWAT headquarters and was attacked by an improvised explosive device. One vehicle was damaged, but the attacks resulted in no injuries.

The Al Kut patrol killed 11 enemy fighters.

ISF, CF defend checkpoint, kill 8 militants

Iraqi Security Forces and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers killed eight militants after they were attacked at an Iraqi Army checkpoint with rocket propelled grenades and small-arms fire in northern Baghdad at approximately 2:30 p.m. March 27.

An MND-B aerial weapons team provided air support and engaged the terrorists, killing eight.

One Iraqi Army Soldier was killed during the attack and seven others were wounded.

The wounded Soldiers were treated at the scene and were evacuated to a local hospital.

“We offer our condolence to the families of the Soldier who was killed, and those who were wounded in their heroically successful efforts while standing their ground and defeating the terrorists,” said Lt. Col. Steven Stover, spokesman, MND-B.
