Rio Grande Valley and Pandemic Flu
The state of Texas is reporting 5,372 cases of pandemic H1N1 influenza, or swine flu. 128 of the state’s 254 counties have reported cases. 22.4% of the cases are from one county, Hidalgo. This is reported to be one of the fastest growing counties in the united States and the seventh most populous county in Texas. McAllen is the largest city. Just downstream from Hidalgo at the mouth of the Rio Grande is Cameron County, and Brownsville. Cameron reports 7.5% of the Texas pandemic flu cases. Well upstream is El Paso county, with the city of the same name and several military bases. It reports 8.8% of the swine flu cases in Texas. Pandemic Swine Flu – H1N1 Discussion for July 25 2009
Here is a brief discussion of the swine flu situation in select states. The CDC is no longer publicly tracking case numbers. July 24, 2009 is the last day that CDC is providing individual confirmed and probable cases of novel H1N1 influenza. Texas has the second highest number of swine flu, or h1n1 influenza, cases in the United States at this time. There have been 43 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in Texas. The total includes 5 residents of Mexico. Case counts will not be updated before 10 a.m. May 4. There has been one death in Texas. A young boy from Mexico City who had underlying health problems died last month in a Houston-area hospital. Swine Flu – Morning Update 4-29-2009
WHO from yesterday: The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 19:15 GMT, 28 April 2009, seven countries have officially reported cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection. The United States Government has reported 64 laboratory confirmed human cases, with no deaths. Mexico has reported 26 confirmed human cases of infection including seven deaths. The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths – Canada (6), New Zealand (3), the United Kingdom (2), Israel (2) and Spain (2). The CDC case number site is unchanged at this time. AP is claiming CDC confirmation of a swine flu related death in Texas, a toddler. The Texas Health Department site does not have this information. Military Flu Screening IDs Texas Swine Flu Cases
The Defense Department’s worldwide influenza monitoring program and decisive action by the medical staff at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, is being credited with helping to identify two cases of swine flu early to help prevent a potential spread. Two 16-year-old boys, both military family members and students at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, reported to the Randolph Military Clinic in mid-April suffering from fever, coughs and chills. Air Force Lt. Col. Gregory York, deputy commander of the 12th Medical Group, said both exhibited “classic flu-like symptoms.” Rather than simply sending the boys home to rest and hydrate, their doctors took the extra step of harvesting “nasal washes” and submitting them for testing through the Defense Department’s Worldwide Influenza Surveillance Program, York explained. Swine Flu Update – 04-26-2009
The CDC is reporting 20 confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States. California: 7 cases. Texas: 2 cases. A third case has been featured in the media, under “quarantine”, but his case is NOT part of the official CDC count. New York: 8 cases. The CDC has confirmed the initial findings of the NYC Health Department that 8 of the 9 students that were swabbed, from the St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, were positive for swine flu. Peers interviewed on Fox said that some students at the school took their Spring Break in Mexico. Kansas: 2 cases, in the same household. Male visited Mexico recently. Ohio: 1 case.
