Swine Flu Update – Early Morning 4-30-2009

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Here are some media reports from the overnight.

Delaware Online

All 10 Delaware cases that are consistent with — but not confirmed as — swine flu were reported among students at the University of Delaware in Newark, where more than 350 students were seen by health professionals at two clinics Wednesday. No information about the ages, residences or whereabouts of the 10 patients was released Wednesday, but all were given Tamiflu antiviral medication and told to stay home.

New Mexico has two probable cases of swine flu and state officials are awaiting confirmation of testing from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Gov. Bill Richardson and officials of the Department of Health announced Wednesday that preliminary testing by the state found the flu likely in a 1-year-old boy from Santa Fe County and an 18-year-old male from Valencia County. Both are recovering. The infant was hospitalized but the teenager wasn’t.

The teenager was being home-schooled and did not attend public schools.

State officials said they expect to learn from the CDC as early as Friday whether the two cases are confirmed as swine flu.

“This is a time for concern. This is not a time for panic,” Health Secretary Dr. Alfredo Vigil said at a news conference in Santa Fe.

Because swine flu is a new virus, the state’s testing lab cannot definitely confirm its presence, according to department spokeswoman Deborah Busemeyer. If the lab cannot rule out swine flu in a particular sample, it is sent to the CDC.

Susan Walsh, deputy commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, said all seven of the state’s probable cases had “travel associations” with Mexico and California.

None of the seven patients was hospitalized, Walsh said. She declined to say where they are from, other than “across the state.” She also said none of New Jersey’s probable cases involved schools.

ABC News

Schools in 14 states have shut their doors on more than 160,000 schoolchildren as the nation’s swine flu crisis enters its second week.

In total, more than 100 school systems have closed at least one school as the nation tries to stifle the spread of the disease. In Texas Wednesday night, officials announced that the entire Fort Worth school system would be closed through at least May 8 as a precaution, idling 80,000 children in 140 schools.

For now, the WHO’s breakdown of confirmed cases is: United States, 91, including one death; Mexico, 26, seven deaths; Canada, 13; Spain, 10; United Kingdom, five; Germany, three; New Zealand, three; Israel, two; Austria, one.

Peru and Switzerland reported their first cases late Wednesday and early Thursday, respectively — but they were not among the WHO’s official tally.

The WHO is also investigating possible swine flu cases: 11 in New Zealand, 2 in France; 1 in South Korea, and 1 in Switzerland.
