More Swine Flu Cases in New York City
Total of 28 swine flu cases at St. Francis High. 17 more are probable. All are mild cases, all patients are recovering or stable. Clear evidence of human to human transmission since most patients have no history of travel. Suspicion is that case count at the school may approach 100. St. Francis is only outbreak in New York City. St. Francis patients asked to stay home for 7-10 days, or 48 hours after feeling better, whichever is longer. NYC residents are going to emergency departments at hospitals with AND without symptoms. Please DO NOT go to the hospital unless you are severely ill. So far, illness is mild. Swine Flu Update – 04-26-2009
The CDC is reporting 20 confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States. California: 7 cases. Texas: 2 cases. A third case has been featured in the media, under “quarantine”, but his case is NOT part of the official CDC count. New York: 8 cases. The CDC has confirmed the initial findings of the NYC Health Department that 8 of the 9 students that were swabbed, from the St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, were positive for swine flu. Peers interviewed on Fox said that some students at the school took their Spring Break in Mexico. Kansas: 2 cases, in the same household. Male visited Mexico recently. Ohio: 1 case. Probable Swine Flu in New York City
In a press conference held moments ago, the head of the New York City Health Department, Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, described the situation at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens. About 100 students reported flu-like symptoms yesterday and the Health Department was called in. All of the students have been contacted. All of the students report mild symptoms. None have needed to be hospitalized. The Health Department was able to obtain nine oral/nasal swabs and testing at their lab revealed that 8 of the 9 were probable for swine flu. The samples have been sent to the CDC for additional tests. St. Francis Preparatory School has postponed events, and will likely be closed on Monday.
