Friday, October 10th, 2008

Afghan national security forces and coalition forces killed 12 militants in Shaheed Hasas district, Oruzgan province, Oct. 8, 2008.

The forces were conducting a combat security patrol when they were attacked by militants with small-arms, mortar and rocket-propelled grenade fire.

ANSF and coalition forces responded to the attack with small-arms, RPG and supporting fires, killing 12 militants.

Local Afghan villagers told ANSF and coalition forces that militant fire killed 10 Afghan civilians in a nearby village.

Militant fire also injured three women and six children who sought out coalition forces for medical care. All of the injured were medically evacuated to a coalition hospital where they are being treated for their injuries.

No ANSF or coalition forces casualties have been reported.

Shortly after the engagement, ANSF and coalition forces met with local leaders and family members of the deceased, who expressed their gratitude for coalition forces in treating those injured by the insurgents.

“The acts committed today are acts of terrorism against innocent civilians,” Assadullah Hamdam, Oruzgan provincial governor. “I hope these enemies are captured and are brought to justice. I appreciate the effort of ANSF and the coalition force for their actions today.”

25 Talibs Toes Up

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition forces fought militants in a series of engagements that left 25 militants and eight noncombatants dead in Khas Oruzgan District, Oruzgan province Sunday [August 10 2008].

Militants used a series of buildings along a known Coalition route to launch multiple ambushes against Coalition troops and then fled into a neighboring compound where they held 11 non-combatants hostage, including several children and an infant.

As the Coalition elements attempted to disengage from a previous attack, militants ambushed the Coalition service members from the compound that housed the non-combatants using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

An anonymous eyewitness told Coalition forces that the civilians tried to escape the compound, but the militants beat them and refused to let them leave.

Coalition troops called in close-air support to engage the militants hiding in the structure. They did not have knowledge of non-combatants in the buildings at that time.

Survivors reported that Coalition aircraft dropped a bomb on the enemy position which killed eight of the civilians.

Once the battle had ended, Coalition and ANSF troops searched the compound where they discovered the three survivors.
Coalition troops rendered medical aid, and brought the survivors to a Coalition base to receive further medical treatment.

“The Taliban uses innocent civilians’ homes, taking them by force to attack Afghan and Coalition forces,” said Juma Gul, the Head Provincial Police Chief of Oruzgan.

“If civilians get killed during these attacks, the responsibility falls on the Taliban and their terrorist sponsors,” he said. “Afghan and Coalition forces always use extreme measures to avoid collateral damage. In this situation, in Khas Oruzgan, the Taliban was attacking the Afghan and Coalition forces from a civilian compound. Unfortunately, eight civilians were killed and three wounded. They were held by the Taliban against their will.”

Boats? The Taliban has boats in a landlocked country???

July 13, 2008 – At least 40 insurgents during an ongoing operation in Afghanistan’s Helmand province yesterday, military officials said.

The fight began when insurgent forces attacked an Afghan and coalition security patrol yesterday in Sangin district. From multiple concealed and fortified positions, the insurgents used small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. The ensuing fight led the combined forces to return fire and call for precision air strikes.

The friendly forces destroyed four insurgent fortified fighting positions, two bunkers, two trench lines, one improvised-explosive-device site, and more than 30 enemy boats, officials said.

Elsewhere, Afghan and coalition forces killed several insurgents while conducting a security patrol in the Shaheed Hasas district in Oruzgan province.

The combined forces noticed several armed militants moving into a fighting position. The militants attacked the patrol with small-arms fire, officials said. The combined forces responded with small-arms fire, killing several insurgents.

No Afghan, coalition or civilian casualties were reported, officials said.

In July 10 operations, four militants were detained during a coalition operation in Ghazni province.

Also July 10, coalition forces searched several compounds in the Andar district targeting a militant involved in transporting foreign fighters in the area. During their search, forces discovered a trap door under which three militants and a child were hiding. The three militants were detained, while the child was returned unharmed to the care of his mother, officials said. A fourth militant was detained during the course of the operation.
