Al-Maleyia Sewer System Project
A project to improve water drainage in the Al Maleyia neighborhood of Mosul is currently underway. The storm drainage system will reduce flooding in the area and enhance the storm and sewer system in the neighborhood. The Iraqi government-funded project includes the installation of new sewer pipes, manholes, retaining walls and drop inlets. The construction, which began in September and is scheduled to be completed in mid January 2009, will cost $605,000 U.S. “The Iraqi government continues to conduct projects such as this throughout the city and surrounding communities to improve the area’s infrastructure and the lives of the residents,†said Maj. Terrorists Kill Themselves, Civilians
A terrorist detonated a suicide vest Sunday in Mosul while Coalition forces were conducting an operation to capture a wanted man. As Coalition forces entered the building housing the terrorist, they began receiving small arms fire. Coalition forces returned fire once engaged. A terrorist detonated a suicide vest shortly thereafter in the house. During the operation, five terrorists, along with three women and three children were killed. Two additional children, one of which was injured, were found near the building and moved to safety. Foreign Terrorists Coming to Iraq
Coalition forces detained four suspected terrorists during operations to disrupt the al-Qaeda in Iraq foreign terrorist facilitation network in northern Iraq Wednesday. In Mosul, Coalition forces captured two wanted men and one additional detainee reportedly tied to the AQI network that smuggles materiel and foreigners into Iraq for terrorist attacks. One of the men is also assessed to conspire with AQI senior leaders in Mosul. Tunnel Attack Against Provincial Hall Thwarted
One of the most unusual attacks in Iraq. Two al-Qaeda in Iraq members were detained Sept. 1 in Mosul for planning a bomb attack against Provincial Hall. During a patrol that lead to a search of a bakery near Provincial Hall, Coalition force soldiers detained two AQI members who tested positive for explosives. CF soldiers were acting on a report regarding a planned bomb attack against Provincial Hall by way of a tunnel system. “This kind of evil deed attempted by al-Qaeda and their affiliates in the Islamic State of Iraq shows how evil this organization is,†said Maj. Al-Qaeda Hideout Destroyed
Coalition forces killed four and detained nine suspected terrorists while further degrading al-Qaeda in Iraq operations in central and northern Iraq Wednesday and Thursday [June 11-12 2008]. Detainees in custody provided information that led Coalition forces to Diyala province, where they targeted leaders of an al-Qaeda in Iraq suicide-bombing network Thursday. Coalition forces positively identified the targeted individual, known for making suicide vests, and followed him into a remote area north of Baqubah, about 50 kilometers north of Baghdad. The area was believed to be a hideout location used to house weapons. The house was rigged with booby-traps throughout. Coalition forces called for supporting aircraft to engage the area, which triggered several secondary explosions, indicating bomb materials and weapons on the ground. Christians sign up to join Iraqi Police force
Scores of Christian men lined up to join the Iraqi Police force during a recruiting drive in Tall Kayf, 15 km north of Mosul, April 28.
