Fighting the Taliban – the Pink Boxers Brigade

Army Spc. Zachary Boyd, 19, who hails from Fort Worth, Texas, said he was in his sleeping quarters at Firebase Restrepo in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan’s Kunar province when the Taliban attacked, forcing him to take up a defensive position while clad only in his helmet, protective vest, a T-shirt and his pink “I Love NY” boxer shorts, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Thursday. A wire service photographer snapped a picture of Boyd rushing into action in his undershorts and the snapshot wound up on the front pages of the Star-Telegram and The New York Times. ISAF Forces Repel Militants in Kunar

International Security Assistance Force – Afghanistan forces successfully defeated militants during four engagements Sunday [June 8 2008] in Kunar province. The first engagement happened Sunday morning as an ISAF convoy, traveling near the village of Dabarzay in Kunar province’s Manogai District, defeated militants who attacked their convoy. Two civilians were injured by militant fire and were evacuated to nearby ISAF medical facilities for treatment. In the second incident, militants attempted to attack an ISAF re-supply helicopter with small-arms fire at an ISAF base near the village of Serray, Chowkay District. ISAF and Afghan national security forces successfully repelled the attack with small-arms fire, machine guns, mortars and attack helicopters. Matin Bridge to Connect Village to Pech Road

DVIDS The Matin bridge ground breaking ceremony was held recently in Matin Village. The Kunar Province Governor Sayed Fazlullah, along with members of the Kunar PRT, Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police participated in the ceremony. The $7.5 million project, funded by the Kunar PRT, will employ The Unique Builders Construction Company to build a jingle truck capable bridge linking Matin with the Pech River Road in eastern Afghanistan. The people of Matin are currently hampered from interacting with surrounding villages because the road leading to Matin washed away in a flash flood nearly six months ago. They must use a cable and a hand crank to cross the 30-foot-wide Pech River on the valley floor.
