Brits See Kabul Improvements

Members of ISAF’s Force Protection Company conducted a foot patrol in Kabul Nov. 16 in order to establish a presence in the area and meet with local civilians. The 4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, of the British Territorial Army is in charge of force protection for the headquarters base. The battalion soldiers are trained in the tactics and operations necessary to provide perimeter security, in addition to conducting foot patrols around the city. “Out of all the tasks we perform here in Kabul, getting out and patrolling is what we enjoy the most because that’s what we are, infantry soldiers,” said Delta Platoon’s Second in Command Sergeant Major Tony Archer, from Middlesbrough. Macedonians Return to Kabul After 2,338 Years

Alexander the Great, an ancient Greek king of Macedon, was one of the most successful military commanders in history. He conquered Kabul during his conquest of the Persian Empire. Now his descendants are back. But this time, they come in peace. Approximately 130 soldiers from the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion, 1st Mechanized Infantry Company, 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade, have been deployed to ISAF Headquarters since July 10, 2008. The Macedonians are helping ISAF in assisting the Afghan government in extending and exercising its authority and influence across the country, creating the conditions for stabilization and reconstruction. ISAF supports reconstruction in Kabul

ISAF’s troops of Regional Command Capital (RC-Capital) are conducting reconstruction projects worth more than $3.6 million in Kabul’s remote areas. The Italian Task Force operating in eastern Kabul recently inaugurated two foot bridges and five wells in the rural district of Sarobi. Works are also in progress for a library and a new police station. The Italian contingent operating in the valleys of Musahi and Char Asyab have also been working on reconstruction projects. They laid the first stone of a new school for 300 students and will soon inaugurate a number of public facilities in the southern part of the capital. All the projects are being conducted in coordination with local authorities and are predominantly funded by the Italian Ministry of Defence at a cost of $2 million. At Street Level in Kabul

AP Last year the streets in parts of the old city dropped by nine feet. The reason? A massive garbage haul. Just about every unemployed man in Murad Khane was recruited to clean up years of litter and mud piled on top of the streets. By the time they were done, the streets and alleys were lower. The garbage project is part of an effort to clean up and restore old Kabul, after six years of relative peace and with millions of dollars from foreign donors. The Turquoise Mountain Foundation, which is dedicated to traditional Afghan arts and architecture, has spent $1 million on conservation and clean-up in the Murad Khane neighborhood since last year.
