Bringing Pure Water to Shajoy
ISAF’s Zabul Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) introduced a water purification process to village elders in Shajoy district, Zabul province July 31. The process is called hypochlorite generation. The machine uses electricity to convert salt water into a chlorine solution; this solution is added to water drawn from village wells. Salman Pak’s Ministry of Irrigation on Schedule
Salman Pak’s ministry of irrigation is on schedule with piping projects to restore drinking water for residents of Salman Pak and Dura’iya. The projects, funded by the government of Iraq, are focused on replacing water lines damaged over recent years. The GoI is increasing efforts to rebuild and restore basic services in the region, said Capt. Matthew Givens, projects planner for the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment. “Every project completed in Salman Pak and the surrounding regions are made possible by increased security,†he said. Givens, a native of Columbus, Ga., said projects like this one will eventually provide clean drinking water for the entire region. “It is only one example of renewed interest by the government of Iraq in services provided for the local people, here,†he said. Water Purification Station Opens in Arab Jabour
A new well-water purification station opened in Al Buaytha on March 25, north of Combat Outpost Murray. Since arriving in Arab Jabour 10 months ago, coalition forces have assessed challenges facing the area. A serious concern was lack of access to clean water; completion of the station addressed that need. The water purification station, named Esaalat Salam or ‘Pump of Peace’, is capable of providing 1000 liters of clean water per hour and can serve a 400-square-kilometer area. The station is one of three wells with a purification system in the region which is roughly the size of Baltimore, Md., and patrolled by Soldiers of the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division.
