Russian Navy Blockades Georgia, Ukraine Concerned

Naval blockade seems to be in place

The Navy of the Russian Federation today appeared to have taken a further escalatory step in its aggressive war against Georgia. “The Russian Navy is imposing an illegal blockade on Georgia,” said Alexander Lomaia, Secretary of National Security Council of Georgia, late on Saturday. Over the last 48 hours, Russian naval vessels have turned back several ships bound for Georgia with humanitarian supplies.

“Today,” said Lomaia, “the Russian Navy intercepted Lotus I, a Moldovan-flagged merchant vessel carrying wheat.” The ship was turned away, denying the Georgian population an essential food shipment.

Ukraine may act against Russian navy

“Ukraine … reserves the right to bar warships and vessels which could take part in the action (conflict with Georgia) from returning to Ukrainian territory until the conflict is solved,” a Ukrainian Foreign Ministry statement.

Moscow, involved in a military conflict with Tbilisi over Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia, said earlier on Sunday its warships have arrived at Georgia’s Black Sea coast. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is based in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol.

“The Ukrainian side warns the Russian side against the possibility of the Black Sea warships taking part in the conflict over South Ossetia,” said the statement posted on the ministry website www.mfa.gov.ua
