Rochester’s Treasure
It’s late Thursday. I’ve been working all week. I’m beat. Here’s a treat for the nature lover in all of us.
Rochester New York is unique in many ways and this is one of its most unique and best kept secrets. The City has a river and a riverine gorge running through it. Below the fold are photos I took today at lunch. The City is on either side of the gorge but you wouldn’t know it in many places.
- Looking north along the Genesee River in Rochester. The Driving Park Bridge is in the foreground.
- Looking south along the Genesee River in Rochester. The building in the right distance is the Kodak Offices.
- The Hawkeye plant is the building in the upper left. The building in the gorge is either a Kodak building or perhaps part of the Rochester Gas & Electric hydro power generation system.
- The Lower Falls of the Genesse River in Rochester. There are three waterfalls in the heart of downtown.
- Another view of the gorge looking north from the Driving Park bridge. The rock visible in the gorge ranges from 410 to 430 million years old and is a mix of layers of shale, limestone and sandstone.

how did I never discover this while I was a student in Rochester?
The Lower Falls reminds me of a place similar to it but much smaller. It’s on the Shirley/Groton border in Massachusetts, not too far from where I grew up. It’s a pretty sight. Trouble is, it’s located next to a dangerous five-way intersection.
I don’t know who came up with that last idea or why…
