Reuters Spin Zone
The latest Newsweek poll is out, and the post convention bounce is the lowest in the history of the poll. However, Reuters can always be counted on to spin it in the left direction.
| Yahoo WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Democratic presidential ticket gained a solid bounce in a new poll following last week’s convention but the new nominee, Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), said on Sunday he wasn’t paying attention Kerry, appearing on “Fox News Sunday” with his running mate, Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites), said he remembered far too well the polls last year that showed his presidential bid staggering. “Polls are not what’s important. What’s important is what we’re going to do for America,” Kerry said. “I don’t read polls. I really don’t. They are going to go up and down. They’re going to change,” he added. The Newsweek poll released on Saturday said Kerry, who has been running in a virtual dead heat with Republican President Bush (news - web sites), gained a four-point boost in the polls from the Democratic National Convention held last week in Boston. In the poll conducted on Thursday and on Friday, Kerry received 49 percent of the vote to Bush’s 42 percent and 3 percent for independent candidate Ralph Nader (news - web sites). In early July, Kerry led Bush 47 percent to 44 percent, with Nader at 3 percent. Without Nader in the race, Kerry led Bush in the new poll by 51 percent to 45 percent. The poll of about 1,000 registered voters had a 3 percent margin of error. |
Here’s a picture of the story in case it “disappears”.

Newsweek’s headline is A Baby Bounce?
July 31 - Coming out of the Democratic National Convention in Boston, Sen. John Kerry now holds a seven-point lead over President George W. Bush (49 percent to 42 percent) in a three-way race with independent Ralph Nader (3 percent), according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll The poll was taken over two nights, both before and after Kerry’s acceptance speech. Respondents who were queried after Kerry’s Thursday night speech gave the Democrat a ten-point lead over Bush. Three weeks ago, Kerry’s lead was three points.
Kerry’s four-point “bounce” is the smallest in the history of the NEWSWEEK poll. There are several factors that may have contributed to the limited surge, including the timing of the poll. On Thursday, Kerry had just a two-point lead over Bush (47 percent to 45 percent), suggesting that his Friday night speech had a significant impact. Additionally, Kerry’s decision to announce his vice-presidential choice of John Edwards three weeks before the convention may have blunted the gathering’s impact. And limited coverage by the three major networks also may have hurt Kerry.
Kinda a different story from Reuters, ain’t it? But even Newsweek can’t help but spin it to the left.
