Religious Roof Rends
How much does snow weigh, you might ask? A foot of snow is “about” one inch of water. That works out to five pounds per square foot. So, eight feet of snow is 40 pounds per square foot.
Many people are still digging out from the snow in Oswego County.
One building is having a hard time with the snow. A 200-year-old church could not stand the weight of 8 feet of snow on the roof.
Beams inside the attic of the First United Methodist Church in Mexico began to break and plaster started falling off the walls. Shovelers climbed up to the roof to begin to get rid of the snow. While all this was going on, services at the church were moved across the street.
“The church is our community of people and while we have some sentimental attachment to the building, what’s most important is our faith community,” said Fred Ringwald, chair of the board of trustees.
Church leaders said the cost of the roof repairs should be covered by the church’s insurance.
Presumably churches are covered for “acts of God”.
