The Al Nahrawan irrigation project in Baghdad Province was completed last week. The $2M project renovated the Old Al Karguila, New Al Karguila and Al Nahrawan pump stations. The project provides irrigation water to farmers to better utilize approximately 15,000 hectares of agricultural land in the region.
Construction began on the Al Jazraand Al Rawda paving project in Najaf Province. Work began on July 15 and is expected to be completed by this November. The $84,000 project will provide Najaf Province with two newly paved roads that will provide valuable access to vital streets and essential services.
Construction is complete on the Al Rasheed Police Station in Baghdad Province. The $1M project was completed on July 11 and will provide a better and more secure work environment for the police staff. The facility will serve more than 45,000 in the Al Rasheed neighborhood.
Construction started on five water well projects in Erbil Province. The projects, which all began on July 15 are expected to be completed by early Jan. Each project –Shewa Ziarat($97,000), Aqubani Saru($81,000), Bapishtyan($82,000), Kawartian($59,000) and Keshke($80,000) –includes well drilling, installing water networks and generators. and building concrete water storage tanks. Each project will provide clean water and assist in reducing waterborne diseases.
USAID Project Snapshot: Agriculture
Increased Olive Tree Population:Planted 9,000 olive trees in 16 plots countrywide.
Provided Farm Machinery Training & Tools:Trained 107 mechanics in farm machinery repair and supplied tools to help establish private repair businesses.
Rehabilitated Veterinary Clinics:64 veterinary clinics have been rehabilitated, serving more than 127,000 animal breeders.
Crop Production Seed Improvement:Distributed169 wheat seed cleaners to nine non-governmental organizations in 18 provinces.
Increased Training:175 operators trained in wheat seed cleaning and treating.
Farm Machinery Repair:To date, a total of 2,629 tractors have been repaired throughout Iraq.
Irrigation:Provided small-scale grants that increased canal and water infrastructure improvements on 320,000 acres of land serving 445,000 Iraqis.
