Private First Class Andrew Small
No medal cited, and I’m not certain what weapon he carried, since a “machine gun” is a civilian term.
An American platoon patrol in the mountains of Nuristan Province, was ambushed by an insurgent force concealed less than 50 yards away. When the rest of the patrol sought cover, Private Small moved to the sound of the guns, up the trail, into the kill zone.
In complete disregard for his wounds and safety, Private Small continued to fire his machine gun at the enemy, refusing to relinquish his ground or seek medical attention until the attacking force was destroyed. The enemy massed their fire on him, mortally wounding him and killing two of his fellow Soldiers. After the fight, Private Small’s comrades found him lying in the middle of the trail, out of ammunition, machine gun in hand, still facing the enemy as he fell.
Private Small’s gallant and selfless actions saved the lives of three of his fellow Soldiers and represents the finest traditions of heroism in combat!
