Nine Iranian detainees were released today by Multi-National Force-Iraq.

The release followed a careful review of individual records to determine if they posed a security threat to Iraq, and if their detention was of continued intelligence value. Based on this review, all nine individuals were determined to no longer pose a security risk and to be of no continued intelligence value.

Today’s release is similar to other detainee releases, which occur routinely throughout the year. In fact, there was a release ceremony for almost 500 detainees Thursday, and on average 50 detainees are released daily.

The Iranian detainees released today are:

Adil Wusayn Shamarad Muhammad
Date Captured: February 20, 2006
Background: Coalition Forces captured Wusayn during a raid to disrupt al-Qaeda operations in Iraq.

Azzam Hasan Karam Abd
Date Captured: February 20, 2006
Background: Hasan was captured by Coalition Forces during a raid to disrupt al-Qaeda operations in Iraq.

Brujerd Chegini
Date Captured: January 11, 2007
Background: Chegini was captured in Irbil based on an intelligence driven raid.

Habib Muhammad Ghuribani Kurdi
Date Captured: August 1, 2007
Background: Muhammad was captured during an intelligence-driven raid aimed at capturing a senior insurgent.

Hamid Reza Asgari Shukuh
Date Captured: January 11, 2007
Background: Asgari was captured in Irbil based on an intelligence driven raid.

Ibrahim Mahmud Ahmed / al-Kubady al-Ubaydi
Date Captured: April 8, 2005
Background: Mahmud was captured by Coalition Forces during a raid in Ramadi.

Jafan Allah
Date Captured: July 26, 2007
Background: Allah turned himself in at a border checkpoint.

Mohammad Ali Abbas al-Buzuda
Date Captured: May 6, 2007
Background: Mohammad was captured by Iraqi Police in al-Qadisiyah for illegal entry into Iraq from Iran.

Raed Abdurehman Hussain al-Kobadi
Date Captured: November 20, 2004
Background: Abdurehman was captured by Coalition Forces in Fallujah while attempting to flee from the scene of a mortar attack.

Multi-National Force – Iraq released the nine detainees to the Government of Iraq, for further transfer to the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad. The Iranian Embassy indicated their intent is to return the individuals to Iran today.

Multi-National Force – Iraq will continue to work with the Government of Iraq to ensure that individuals who pose a security risk remain in detention.
