Mass Grave Found Near Lake Thar Thar
Twenty-two corpses were discovered by Iraqi Soldiers in the Lake Thar Thar region during combined operations with Coalition Forces Nov. 3.
The 1st Iraqi Army Division and 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, launched Operation Fahwat al Asad II Nov. 4, which included both ground and air assault forces searching numerous potential insurgent locations to defeat al Qaeda elements operating in the Thar Thar region.
“The purpose of this operation is to deny al Qaeda a safe haven and eliminate their freedom of maneuver,” said Col. John Charlton, 1st BCT commander. “They have exploited this area, and this operation will prevent them from conducting future attacks.”
The Iraqi Army and Provincial Security Forces are investigating the mass grave to determine the identities of the deceased and the causes of death for notification of their families.
Also during the opening phases of the operation, two car bomb facilities and a number of weapons caches were destroyed, and approximately 30 males were detained.
This is Task Force Raider’s second brigade operation conducted in two weeks targeting al-Qaeda in rural areas. The first operation discovered numerous improvised explosive devices and detained several al Qaeda members and affiliates.
