The Rochester Fire Department and police were called to a home on the city’s northwest side and neighbors complained of a foul odor.

Rochester police were called to a duplex on Jones Avenue to check on the person living there, who had not been seen in a few days. What they found were some of the worst living conditions they had ever seen.

“It was so bad that we couldn’t go in without protective gear,” said Capt. Thomas D’Angelo, Rochester Police Department.

The fire department’s HAZMAT entered the apartment at about noon Wednesday. Buzzing flies and a strong odor greeted them. Neighbors feared for the person’s welfare.

When crews went inside firefighters followed along outside with a video feed.

“I guess we kind of came here and expected the worst and it turned out to be not so bad though,” said Tom Johnson, Rochester Fire Department.

Not so bad by toxic standards, but police say when the tenant moved out she left behind furniture, rotting food and human waste inside.

The building manager says the former tenant had been living in the apartment for six months and wouldn’t let anyone inside.

“I can go in, but it’s going to take days to try to get this together after all the filth. It’s just terrible that people live like this, especially when they have small children,” said Barry Jones, building manager.

The building manager said the tenant had three or four children. The apartment was boarded up for the safety of the neighbors. Police say the owner of the property is responsible for cleaning it up.
