Chimney Bluffs State Park

Here are some pics from my visit to Chimney Bluffs State Park. I would highly recommend a trip to this truly spectacular sight. It’s just east of Sodus Bay, north of 104, and about an hour driving time from Rochester.

These formations are the result of erosion, wind and water, acting on a glacial ridge. These are not rock formations, but soil and glacial deposits. There are several layers of clay.

I would guess that the appearance of the formations is quite variable and subject to change. They may cease to exist after a bad storm, due to the nature of their creation. In a decade, the area will have different formations, perhaps even more breathtaking.

If you visit, go to the east parking area. It’s then a short walk along the bluff to the formations. Parking in the west lot, which I did, resulted in a long hike in a very muddy woods. Some of the trail runs right at the edge of the cliff, too, and there are no state markers to warn you. Trees are also down across the trails. The state is spending as little as it can on this park in order to not have to charge an entry fee.

So, if you are a hiker and heights do not bother you. this FREE park is a once in a lifetime visit.
