Afghanistan update for May 29-30 2010

DVIDS May 29 An Afghan-international security force used precision air strikes to kill the Taliban shadow governor of Baghlan province and several of his fighters last night. Aircraft were called to a rural area in Baghlan-e Jadid district after human intelligence sources confirmed two vehicles were transporting insurgents and weapons through the area. Before engaging, coalition forces waited until the vehicles were well clear of any structures to minimize the possibility of civilian casualties. When the armed passengers left the vehicles they were engaged and killed by aircraft. A ground security force then entered the area and came under fire from insurgents in a nearby cave. Latest on Bagram base attack

Military officials provided more details May 21 on the May 19 attack here that killed a U.S. contractor and wounded several service members. Sixteen insurgents were killed and five were detained after an estimated 30 to 40 militants launched an attack on the airfield’s outer perimeter during the early morning hours. During the attack, coalition forces and Afghan police responded immediately, maintaining security on the airfield and blocking the insurgents’ ability to completely breach the base’s perimeter, officials said. Meanwhile, Army helicopters providing aerial security during the attack engaged multiple insurgents outside the airfield. Coalition forces killed four intended suicide bombers dressed in U.S. military-style uniforms before they could detonate themselves. An enemy mortar pit set up outside the perimeter was destroyed. Bagram Airbase withstands terrorist attack

Several more insurgents were killed in addition to the seven militants who were killed during this morning’s attack on the outer perimeter of Bagram Airfield, bringing the total up to nearly a dozen. The attack included rockets, small arms and grenades. Four of the insurgents killed were intended suicide bombers. One U.S. contractor was killed, nine service members were wounded and a building received minor damages during the attack. Two of the nine wounded were returned to duty, all others are currently in stable condition. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending next of kin notification. “Though it is clear the enemy intended a spectacular event here at BAF, they were unable to breach the perimeter and unable to detonate their suicide vests,” said U.S. Army Lt. Senior leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq killed

Iraqi Security Forces, supported by U.S. Forces, killed the two most-senior leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) early Sunday morning during a series of joint security operations 10 km southwest of Tikrit. Abu Hamzah al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al Masri, is the military leader of AQI, the terrorist organization responsible for facilitating attacks against Iraq and Coalition forces as well as Iraqi civilians. Abu Ayyub al Masri replaced Abu Musab al Zarqawi when Zarqawi was killed in June of 2006 and is directly responsible for high profile bombings and attacks against the people of Iraq. Afghan Update for March 30 2010

Afghan and international forces killed several militants and detained numerous suspected militants in recent operations, military officials reported. No Afghan civilians were harmed in the operations, officials said. – An Afghan-international security force detained several suspected insurgents for further questioning after searching a compound in north Kandahar city last night. – In Paktika province’s Bermal district last night, several militants were killed when they threatened a combined Afghan-international security team. The combined force detained several additional militants and found automatic rifles and multiple rocket-propelled grenades at the compound. – In Wardak province’s Sayyidabad district last night, an Afghan-international force captured a Taliban weapons facilitator accused of buying and selling large amounts of weapons, munitions and explosives for other militant networks. Firefight kills ten Taliban trying to run away

A combined Afghan and international force interdicted three vehicles in three separate engagements, resulting in more than 10 militants killed while pursuing a Taliban commander in Afghanistan’s Helmand province yesterday [Feb. 15 2010]. The force was sent to a rural area in the Washir district after intelligence reports revealed militants were in several vehicles. One of the vehicles drove away and attempted to elude the assault force. As the force attempted to stop it, weapons were pointed at them through the open car windows. The coalition force engaged and killed the militants who were in the car. After the fire fight the ammunition inside the vehicle continued to detonate, causing the force to pull back to a safe distance. Master Sgt. Anthony Siriwardene – Silver Star

Anthony Siriwardene immigrated to the United States from Sri-Lanka at the age of eight, crew up in Arlington, Virginia and graduated from Washington-Lee High School. After graduation he enlisted in the Army as a Combat Engineer before completing the Special Forces Q-Course and earning his Green Beret. In August, four years earlier, Siriwardene and his teammates battled for 56 hours through seven enemy engagements in Zabol Province, Afghanistan. Working alongside the Afghan National Army, Siriwardene’s team came under heavy enemy fire while on patrol in the Buka Ghar Valley, an insurgent stronghold. Afghans protest in Garmsir District

The ISAF Joint Command (IJC) is aware of protests that took place earlier today in Garmsir District. Protestors gathered over an allegation of desecration to the holy Koran. “While denying these allegations, we take them very seriously and support a combined investigation with local Afghan authorities,” said Major Gen. Michael Regner, IJC deputy chief of staff for operations. “ISAF is an international force that includes Muslim soldiers, and we deplore such an action under any circumstances.” This allegation comes in reference to an operation against the Taliban in Garmsir district. Gunnery Sgt. John Mosser – Navy Cross

Gunnery Sgt. John S. Mosser, a native of Dripping Springs, TX, was awarded the Navy Cross, the nation’s second-highest award given for valor in combat, in a ceremony here Dec. 18. Maj. Danny Strelkauskas presented the award to Mosser on behalf of the President of the United States. According the citation, Mosser, currently assigned to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, received the award for “extraordinary heroism while serving as Team Sergeant for Marine Special Operations Company H, 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Special Operations Command, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on June 26, 2008.” Then-SSgt.
