Tsunami: Citigroup Donation

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 18, 2005–Citigroup (NYSE: C) and its employees have contributed $7.4 million to provide relief and reconstruction in the aftermath of the South Asia tsunami disaster, the global financial services company announced today. Citigroup expects the total will grow as the Foundation continues to match employee contributions to tsunami relief efforts.

As of January 18, more than 15,000 of Citigroup’s employees around the world had donated more than $2.2 million in support of the relief efforts. The Citigroup Foundation is matching these donations with a corresponding contribution of more than $2.2 million to the Red Cross and will continue to match employee donations to the relief effort. Combined with the Foundation’s USD$3 million commitment to the relief effort, that brings Citigroup’s total tsunami relief cash contribution to more than $7.4 million to date.

The American Red Cross is thanking Wegmans’ customers for their donations to the tsunami relief fund. In just 12 days, the supermarket chain’s checkout lane campaign raised more than $272,000; that’s in addition to the $100,000 corporate donation from Wegmans. The supermarket is still funneling money to the Red Cross through its CoinStar change-counting machines.

The Tiger Woods Foundation is giving $US100,000 ($A130,360) to earthquake-tsunami relief efforts in Asia, and the PGA Tour is matching that amount.

Woods’ foundation and the tour are donating the money to Give2Asia, with the money directed toward two groups aimed at providing sanctuary and relief to children affected by the tsunami.

The billionaire owner of a Pennsylvania newspaper chain and his wife have donated one (M) million dollars to an organization for its tsunami rescue and rehabilitation effort.
Richard Scaife and his wife, Ritchie, made the donation yesterday to Catholic Relief Services.

Richard Scaife says he and his wife were moved to make the donation because of the scenes of devastation in southern Asia following the tsunami on December 26th.

Richard Scaife is the head of the Tribune-Review Publishing Company, which publishes the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and the Tribune-Review of Greensburg, among other western Pennsylvania newspapers. He is also the chairman of Westminster Holdings Incorporated.
