Tsunami: THE STINGY LIST now current
Look over on the left. $831,427,479. Americans just keep on giving for tsunami relief. My company wrote a check today, modest compared to many but our $8 an hour employees gave what they could and we matched it all. Please don’t forget your local charities. Lots of folks right outside your door also need help. From fire companies and ambulance corps to the United Way or Salvation Army. Please, please don’t forget to set aside a dollar for your friends and neighbors, too. … Read entire article »

Tsunami: THE STINGY LIST Now Updated
How does $786,747,969.55 sound? That’s what the total contributions by Americans, individuals, groups and companies, adds up to as of this update. One billion dollars is within striking distance. Imagine that; one billion dollars from the pockets of Americans to assist people half a planet away, who we have reason to believe don’t like Americans very much. I hope Mr. Egeland can get the right spices, because he should be eating his words. I’ve been able to find numbers from the Sunday collections of 21 of the 178 Roman Catholic Dioceses in the United States. $5,968,493 in donations that were put in the collection basket. Money from the wallets of ordinary Americans. Hollywood, to no one’s surprise, remains silent. … Read entire article »

Tsunami: NBC Concert Status
Wow, the previous post blows me away. The concert, watched by less than six million people, raised about $18 million U.S. That’s… that’s… that’s shameful. pitiful, just plain sad. If the people and the companies involved had each donated a million dollars, they would have raised more. I think it’s fair to say that rarely have so many big names done so much for so little. Nevermind that the performances were, at best, dull. Actually, that’s the problem. It was supposed to be entertaining, and it failed miserably. It has become the Alexander of aid concerts, the Waterworld. … Read entire article »

Tsunami: NBC, Hollywood, and Results
Excuse ME! Hey, NBC, excuse me! You know that huge concert with all those talented and highly compensated people donating their time for tsunami relief? The one that averaged only 5.7 million viewers? It’s been six days. How come you haven’t released the total funds raised numbers? Nothing on your site. Nothing on the Red Cross site. Noting with a Google search. Got something to hide? … Read entire article »

Tsunami: The Latest Stingy List Update
$686,982,534 That’s what the total is for THE STINGY LIST as of tonight’s update. I’m all but certain that this number is $30-$50 million U.S. too low. I have access to donation data that some corporation do not wish to make public. They choose to keep their giving private. In addition, the donations on-line and direct to various charities is understated. Because the information is unclear, I have chosen to leave it off the list rather than duplicate donations already present. For example, a portion of the original U.S. government $35 million went right to the Red Cross. The corporate donations are in a similar state, so I am very reluctant to update the charity totals. What is amazing me the most is the variety of sources for the donations, from children going … Read entire article »

Tsunami: Citigroup Donation
Press Release NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 18, 2005–Citigroup (NYSE: C) and its employees have contributed $7.4 million to provide relief and reconstruction in the aftermath of the South Asia tsunami disaster, the global financial services company announced today. Citigroup expects the total will grow as the Foundation continues to match employee contributions to tsunami relief efforts. As of January 18, more than 15,000 of Citigroup’s employees around the world had donated more than $2.2 million in support of the relief efforts. The Citigroup Foundation is matching these donations with a corresponding contribution of more than $2.2 million to the Red Cross and will continue to match employee donations to the relief effort. Combined with the Foundation’s USD$3 million commitment to the relief effort, that brings Citigroup’s total tsunami relief cash contribution to more … Read entire article »

Tsunami: Hypocrites
January 27th, 2005 | Comments Off
In the New Testament, Jesus tells a parable about the value of charity. A widow gives of her need, and a rich man from his surplus, and Jesus poses the question of which is more valuable. Princess Diana was a charitable person. Yet, I always had to note that she could afford to be. She was wealthy enough that she could do whatever she wanted with her time. That she chose to perform charitable works is laudable. She could afford to. She did not need to work, nor to worry. There’s a young man in my ambulance corps, making about $9 an hour at his job, working nights. He’s chosen to run duty during the days, and is logging nearly 100 hours a month. Did Diana, Princess of Wales ever go without sleep … Read entire article »
