The Saturday D&C has a graphic that updates the murder total for the year. 33. Gee, I was TOO LOW!
D&C on the latest death:
Knox was also known as “Phat Phat,” and several people spray-painted that name with the letters RIP on the brick wall above the spot where he was shot. By late afternoon, that spot had been turned into a shrine of umbrellas and candles.
He had been in the Monroe County Jail as late as Wednesday afternoon on a disorderly conduct charge. He had a pending City Court case for misdemeanor charges of weapons and drug possession.
“He was just a kid trying to grow up and be a man,” said Andre Maddox, Knox’s father. “Maybe he tried to grow up too fast.”
The police happily point out that this is six lower than last year. That’s like saying that the building only partially burnt down. If the murders were distributed evenly throughout the city of Rochester, that would be one thing. They concentrate, however, in certain neighborhoods and in those areas it’s worse than Baghdad.
I don’t have the correct number of shootings, but it is well over 200. It’s small consolation that local shooters’ accuracy is so poor since I’m fairly certain that there’s a significant amount of maiming going on.
The number of men shot in the lower back or upper leg continues to grow. That’s “shot in the ass” for all you reality buffs. I bet I see five or six young men a day limping or walking with a cane around downtown.
