The Greater Rochester Soap Box Derby was almost cancelled Saturday after someone slammed their car through the trailers and ramps built for the event.
Event organizers say the driver crashed into the trailers, drove through tents, and even hit one of the derby cars in the race.
The driver then struck a motor home where volunteers were sleeping and knocked them out of their beds. Organizers say he then backed up and ran over the volunteers’ picnic table, propane tank and grill.
They believe the driver was later caught by police.
“With all the children being hurt and killed on the highways lately, I was just thankful no one was hurt,” said Derby Director Mark Scuderi.
Organizers spent the morning cleaning up the mess and fixing what was broken. The young driver of the damaged car believes she will be able to fix it and take part in the race.
The event will go on as planned Saturday.
