September 2008 was one of the three lowest months for combat deaths since we liberated Iraq. 8 Americans were killed in combat, tying with July 2008 and May 2003. 3 of these were killed in IED attacks.
17 Americans were killed under “non-hostile” circumstances. These are suicides, murders, vehicle accidents, illnesses, etc. 7 of the 17 were due to a helicopter crash.
The same source lists 366 Iraqi soldiers and police as killed in Spetember. This is the second lowest number, with August 2008 being the lowest, since the ICCC began keeping count.
