Americans Aiding Americans

Katrina relief

TOTAL RAISED: $1,001,333,459.  [in-kind not included] [last updated 4-6-2006]

As I did with the Stingy List, I will be documenting private American giving for Hurricane Katrina relief. This will include individuals, groups and companies. As I did before, each item will be cited so that you, the reader, can know that I actually found the information.
The Stingy List was dominated by pharmaceutical companies, who donated tens of millions of dollars of their products. That is unlikely to be necessary in this case. I'm hoping that companies that make trailer houses, modular houses, etc. will step up with some in-kind donation. The oil companies will certainly be among the large donors when this is all over, as well. It may very well be up to us, individual Americans, to donate a dollar more than we can spare and become the reason that Americans Aiding Americans succeeds.

Private giving: This section will display the latest information that I have on the giving by American companies, groups and individuals. The dollar total represents the best data that I have, and excludes donations of goods and services. I will cite a hyperlink for each item if possible, and will provide additional information to enhance the reader's understanding of the donation. Updates will come, and an updated item will be marked with a U. Government assistance: This section will cite both facts and figures on what the various federal, state and local agencies are doing and spending. Other assistance: Just what it says. Foreign aid, and data that doesn't fit into another category.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy 9-15-2005

Americans have contributed $867.3-million to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The pace of giving is unprecedented in American history. In the two weeks after the 2001 terrorist attacks, Americans donated $558-million to charitable causes, and in the two and a half weeks after the tsunamis hit, major American relief groups raised $406-million.

Still, the contributions do not yet come close to the total amount raised in the wake of those disasters. After the 2001 terrorist attacks, charities raised more than $2.2-billion and U.S. charities have collected nearly $1.3-billion for the tsunamis.

The American Red Cross, in Washington, has raised far more than any other charity, taking in $668.7-million. By comparison, two and a half weeks after the South Asian tsunamis, the Red Cross had raised a little more than $173-million.

Early response team volunteers in Mississippi, trained by UMCOR, fanned out to 11 sites today. Early response teams are completely self sufficient, with their own shelter, food, gasoline, and security. Among their first tasks: tarping roofs, making damaged home safe and secure. Some 15 United Methodist churches in the afflicted area have opened their doors as distribution centers. They are stocking emergency supplies, bedding, and prepackaged emergency food.
