Air Strike Bags 6 Taliban

During a routine Close Combat Air escort mission, two ISAF aircraft identified eight insurgents with weapons moving into fighting positions this morning [December 30 2008] in eastern Afghanistan. The aircraft engaged the insurgents, killing six.

Following the engagement, ISAF received allegations that the operation resulted in minor injuries to civilians. ISAF has clear evidence that the aircraft engaged legitimate enemy insurgents.

An initial assessment by the Sub-District Governor of the area is that the allegations are unfounded.

The Combined Joint Task Force will continue to follow up with leaders in the local area.
