222nd greeted by hundreds

Hornell Evening Tribune
By JEN CARPENTER - Staff Writer

The troops were escorted down Interstate 86 to the Hornell Armory on Seneca Street. A portion of Seneca Street in front of the Armory was blocked off to traffic.

Those participating in the escort included the Hornell, Corning and Horseheads police departments, the Patriot Guard, Vietnam Veterans and Legacy Veterans motorcycle clubs and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department. Hornell firefighters also welcomed the troops, and hung a large American flag, donated by Chris Goodrich of Bath, from a fire truck. The Hornell High School marching band and color guard also performed.

The troops were taken inside the gym at the Armory, where many posters and flags adorned the walls, and were officially dismissed. Kitty Oliver, whose husband James was on the bus, said families held various fundraisers for the homecoming, and each soldier received a welcome home gift and gift certificates.

Jamie Clark, coordinator of the family readiness committee, noted the community has been extremely supportive since the company was deployed.

“It’s nice to know we have a small town that can come together in a crisis or a time like this,” she said.
