Coalition Forces Strike Haqqani Command Bunkers
Coalition forces launched precision airstrikes overnight, June 29, against senior Haqqani commanders and command posts in the remote mountains of western Khost province. These militants are responsible for aiding in the movement of foreign fighters through the Khost-Gardez Pass and throughout Afghanistan. Coalition forces planned and coordinated the airstrikes when intelligence sources indicated militant activity at this rugged location earlier in the day. Coalition force aircraft were called in and destroyed a pair of command bunkers, killing more than a dozen militants. The Haqqani network remains one of the most lethal Taliban organizations operating out of Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Area. Haqqani leaders conduct operations in conjunction with other Islamic militant groups with similar goals and interests. The network focuses operations against the government of the Islamic republic of Afghanistan and Afghan national … Read entire article »

Our Best: Sgt. Brenda Bushera
With towering vocals that defy her small stature, Sgt. Brenda Bushera, a member of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Band, has made a connection with the people of Iraq. The Wausaukee, Wis., native has sung the Iraqi national anthem at a number of events since deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, including a Transfer of Authority (ToA) ceremony at Contingency Operating Base Basrah, as well as a ToA ceremony and an end-of-mission ceremony at COB Adder celebrating the contributions of the now-departed Romanian forces in providing support during OIF. Bushera said singing the Iraqi anthem is the easy part. Learning it, however, was a daunting process that required extensive work with interpreters to learn the pronunciation and diction of the Arabic words in the song. “I worked with a British interpreter and … Read entire article »

Wounded Warriors Return to Iraq
The last time Sgt. Christopher A. Burrell was in Iraq he was pulled from a burning vehicle in Sadr City, a neighborhood in Baghdad. A tourniquet applied by another Soldier saved his life, but a nurse here at the Air Force Theater Hospital had to break the tragic news—his left leg was gone, taken by an explosively formed projectile. Now, almost a year and a half later, and after months of rehabilitation and physical therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Burrell returned to Iraq with five other amputee combat veterans as part of Operation Proper Exit. “I don’t remember much, but I remember my nurse,†Burrell said, remembering the incident, which occurred December 2007. “Shelly. She was an angel, there to comfort me when I was in a … Read entire article »

USO Opens R&R Oasis in Basrah Desert
The familiar refrain of “There’s nothing to do around here after work†will hopefully be a thing of the past with the opening of a new center for rest and relaxation. The local United Service Organizations (USO) office and the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) coordinator for 34th Red Bull Infantry Division are teaming up to create an oasis in the middle of the Basrah desert for servicemembers and civilians to escape the pressure of operations. Sarah McConnell, USO director here, said the center, housed in a former dining hall, already has undergone a “soft opening,†meaning there are some services already available. “We have 13 Internet stations set up already, along with 18 phone lines for people to call home,†McConnell said. “Both services are free of charge to anyone who uses … Read entire article »

Swine Flu Parties
June 30th, 2009 | 4 Comments
Many thanks to Glenn Reynolds, Instapundit, for the link. I have a great deal of information about swine flu on this site. My posts may be found at this category link. I have coverage of the worldwide pandemic, the United States, the U.S. military, New York State and select cities in the United States. Please browse and contact me if you have any questions. CNN has this report: Talk of swine flu parties has emerged on Internet forums. The idea is that exposing a child to the H1N1 virus while it remains relatively mild will give the child immunity if the virus returns in a more virulent form later on. The idea is an extension of chicken pox and measles parties that were once a popular way of exposing children to those diseases … Read entire article »
