Major Jason Huang, M.D.
Democrat & Chronicle Huang was an 18-year-old majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Science and Technology of China. In his idealism, he organized a group of students to protest the Communist Party at Tiananmen Square, never expecting the military to respond by killing hundreds of protesters. The next day, Huang was told to report to the police station, placed under house arrest and forced to report back to sign confessions. “Every day, it was mental torture.” After three years, he convinced a friend whose family worked at a hospital to declare him mentally ill so that he could return to his hometown in Shanghai. In 1993, using a fake passport, he escaped to California and was eventually declared a political refugee and a naturalized citizen. He later earned scholarships to Amherst … Read entire article »

Sons of Iraq successfully defend checkpoint
Sons of Iraq killed nine enemy insurgents today during a firefight at a checkpoint near Owja, south of Tikrit, May 29. Members of the local SoI group were attacked when a fuel truck, fabricated to hold enemy fighters, approached the checkpoint and engaged the SoI guards with small-arms fire. As the SoI returned fire, the driver of the fuel truck exited the vehicle and detonated a suicide-vest. No SoI sustained injuries from the blast. The eight remaining fighters then dismounted and attacked the SoI with small-arms fire. Iraqi Army soldiers and Policemen responded to the firefight, eliminating the threat. “If it were not for the SoI identifying the enemy threat, they would have moved through the checkpoint unnoticed, only to cause mayhem somewhere else,†said Maj. Phillip Borders, 1st Special … Read entire article »

Iraqis hold grand re-opening of Sarafiyah Bridge
The promise of a prosperous future for Iraq took one step closer to becoming a reality as the Sarafiyah Bridge linking the Rusafa and Karkh districts of Baghdad was reopened May 27 after being rebuilt. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was present for the opening event, which featured live music, several speeches and a ribbon cutting on the bridge’s road way. The significance of the event was not limited only to the result of the bridges opening, but also in how it came to be as it was the Government of Iraq, who took the initiative to conduct the reconstruction. “The reason I think this event was significant today is because it really shows the resilience of the GoI and their ability to repair this bridge, which was destroyed by an insurgent act, … Read entire article »

SW Baghdad electricity substation adds stability
Businesses and residences of southwest Baghdad will soon benefit from the recent completion of electricity transmission lines and the energizing of a major substation today. Cmdr. Andrew Johnson, Gulf Region Division government lead for electricity transmission and distribution projects in Iraq. “It will connect them directly to the 400kV grid and it is a much more reliable, much more stable source of power than what they are used … Read entire article »
