6 Criminals Killed in Baghdad

Multi-National Division – Baghdad soldiers killed at least six criminals, detained three, and destroyed anti-Coalition force arms overnight and into the early morning of April 30 in separate incidents in Baghdad. At approximately 10:40 p.m., April 29, while patrolling in Istiqal Qada, MND-B soldiers from Company B, 1st Battalion, 68th Combined Arms Battalion, were investigating the site of a reported improvised explosive device when they spotted two criminals attempting to recover an explosively formed penetrator. The 1-68 Soldiers engaged and killed the two men. An explosive ordnance team responded and disposed of the IED. At approximately 3:25 a.m., April 30, MND-B soldiers detained three men near a blast site in northwestern Baghdad, where an MND-B soldier was killed earlier by an IED. Report on the Fort Bragg Video

Over the weekend a video appeared on YouTube, and then the news media picked up on the story. It was a video that a military father took in his son’s barracks at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Soldiers Open Public Works Substation

In the United States, it is easy to overlook all it takes to keep a city’s trash and sewage system up and running. Take the trashcan out to the end of the driveway, return from work and it’s empty. Turn on the faucet and clean water flows. In Baghdad, basic services like sewage, water and trash service are tied to security. While Soldiers work to make the streets safer, their leaders work to put systems in place that will give residents a sense of normalcy. Desert Wolves Secure Border

Border enforcement, the foundation in building a nation’s security, is an important line of defense against threats entering Iraq. The Marines of the Border Transition Team for the Iraqi 5th Brigade, 2nd Region train, mentor and advise Iraq’s department of border enforcement on a daily basis, ensuring security of the region. The BTT members, all augments of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, work most frequently with the Desert Wolves, the headquarters of the 5th Brigade, who heads three battalions responsible for deterring all illegal cross-border activity in their area of operations. The mission of the Desert Wolves includes securing the Iraqi-Jordanian and Syrian borders, preventing terrorists and smugglers from entering the country. The Road to Peace

The small Iraqi city street clamored with singing, dancing and rejoicing. It was a time of celebration. Marines of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1 and local Iraqi security forces and community officials celebrated the opening of al-Tareq Ela al-Salaam, which translates to “The Road to Peace,” here, April 14. Karma Mayor Kamal Abd Al Salam Abd Al Wahid, spoke to the crowd of people including local Iraqi security forces, Iraqi government officials, and Marines. Internet Initiative in Iraq

An initiative to connect Iraqi students and teachers with the rest of the world via Internet is underway in Wasit Province. The Wasit Provincial Reconstruction Team, in concert with the Wasit Director General of Education, started a yearlong initiative in March called Access to Information. The program will provide local schools and libraries with books and resources and open Internet centers to selected secondary schools, universities and municipal library headquarters in al-Hayy and al-Kut, said Vanessa Beary, the PRT public diplomacy officer. The program started with the opening of an Internet center at the al-Kut Girls Secondary School, March 10, and continued with others at Open University April 18 and a similar opening April 20 at the 14 July Boys School. Afghanistan Roundup – 14 or More Talibs Killed

Afghan National Army Commando students captured an insurgent and thwarted an insurgent attack, in Kapisa province, April 21. Members of the newly minted 207th Commando Kandak performed a number of night-time air assault missions, resulting in the capture of one insurgent, numerous small weapons caches and IED materials. “The Company air assaulted into the target area, occupied blocking positions and cleared the objective utilizing speed, surprise and violence of action,” said the Coalition Team Leader in charge of the Commando training.
