Ride to Rebuild
Bunny [the friend formerly known as PG] has updated me on her ride across America. We are currently in Riggins, ID for the night. We’re taking an easy day tomorrow-about 27 miles into Whitebird. Then the next day will be a climb up to Grangeville. We’ll be in Missoula August 2nd or 3rd. Then we’ll be two states completed. I picked up a book for 25 cents at a library in Council, ID so that is a great activity to decompress after the day. Will you include in your blog our bike trip? That will help us with publicity. I understand if you don’t want to, though. You can track our progress whenever we can update our website. Today we have internet, but not access to certain sites, including our website. … Read entire article »

PG’s Big Adventure
My friend, who I have called “PG” for so long on this blog, was the subject of a long piece in the Fall 2006 St. John Fisher College alumni magazine, Collegium. They have graciously given me permission to reprint the article, and her real name is so disclosed. She gave me permission to use her name long ago but I chose to give her a measure of privacy on the net. Like many graduating seniors, Bunny Dugo ‘05 wasn’t entirely sure what her future would hold for her. She had committed to ten months of service with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (AmeriCorps NCCC), but Bunny didn’t know which U.S. communities she would be helping. Her answer came when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. AmeriCorps NCCC was among the … Read entire article »

Moderately Fast Ferry
Some years ago, a bright idea occurred to the city fathers of Rochester, New York. Why not find a way to increase tourism and commerce, and revitalize the lake front at the same time? An angel spoke to Mayor Johnson, who was not a baboon at the time, in a dream. “Lo, I shall send you a ferry, a shipt to guide your city to the Promised Land.” No, I really don’t know what moron came up with the ferry idea or how. I thought it was a boondoggle from the start, but I wished its proponents well. Because, with a little luck, it might all work out. Well… let me tell you. I hope the tax payers of Rochester enjoyed their screwing, because they got it good. And it ain’t over, neither! The … Read entire article »

Update on Iraq’s Progress
State Dept. PDF of 7-19-2006 Modernization of the Maternity and Child Hospital in Irbil, a city of about 900,000, is now complete. The $6.8 million in USG-funded renovations included major structural repairs, a water purification system, a medical waste incinerator, and back-up generators for uninterrupted power. The Iraqi Police Service graduated 3,412 students from basic training courses July 8-15. Four Iraqi Army division headquarters, 20 brigade headquarters, and more than 70 battalions are currently in the lead in their respective geographic areas. During the week of July 12-18, electricity availability averaged 7.3 hours per day in Baghdad and 11.7 hours nationwide. Electricity output reached a post-war record July 17, but for the week was one percent below the same period in 2005. Nine well projects were completed in a portion of the Ninawa Province, which … Read entire article »

Louise, You Let Us Down
The House is on record about earmarks, and it is not pretty. Andy Roth at the Club for Growth has the votes, all 19 of them. Louise Slaughter, D-NY 28, voted to kill two of them and to support the spending of seven of them. She did not vote on four of them. First of all, I thought we paid her to vote. Odds are she would have voted wrong, to support the pork, but not voting is just plain wrong by itself. Here are the votes. House Vote 190 – Dairy education in Iowa ($229,000) House Vote 191 – Hydroponic tomato production in Ohio ($180,000) House Vote 192 – National Grape and Wine Initiative ($100,000) House Vote 204 – Virginia Science Museum ($250,000) House Vote 205 – Juniata Locomotive Demonstration ($1,000,000) House Vote 277 – Swimming … Read entire article »

Iraqis Working Together
Here’s a story of Iraqis working together, on their own initiative. By Maj. Anna Friederich, 2nd BCT PAO, 4th Inf. Div. The southern portion of Iraq is reaping the long overdue benefits of infrastructure rebuilding and trained security forces. Although the areas in the Karbala, Najaf and Babil provinces still have their share of turbulence, some of the success the provinces are enjoying stems from the willingness of local tribes to work together to put their part of Iraq back together, said Capt. Dave Zaino, commander, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. “We are going into areas in the northern sector of our area of operations, finding a large population who are putting the pieces back together on their own,†said Zaino. Last week, Zaino met … Read entire article »

Larry Johnson on Iraq’s Support of Terror
Larry C. Johnson, darling of the left and self-proclaimed expert on terrorism and intelligence matters testified before Congress a few years ago. You will be startled at what he said. House of Representatives – March 11, 2003 [PDF] Nonetheless some countries continue to bankroll terrorists—principally Iran, Syria, and Iraq. We think it is important to highlight the fact that Iraq continues to provide financial support, safe haven, training, or weapons and explosives to groups or individuals that carry out terrorist attacks. While the links to Al Qaeda may be tenuous, there is incontrovertible evidence of Iraqi support for Palestinian terrorist groups. From 1991 thru 2001 there were 4143 international terrorist attacks throughout the world. Saddam Hussein and his regime were implicated in at least 73 of these incidents, which accounted for fewer … Read entire article »

EMS Days
July 30th, 2006 | Comments Off
Twelve hours today at the ambulance, with three calls. The heat was tough, but not the worst I’ve been in. FYI, when a patient says to you “I’m at extreme danger to hurt myself or other people.” take him seriously. Never take that same patient’s boots off. Footpowder, dispersal, surprise. I’m just saying. … Read entire article »
