It is very late and I have work, paying work, to do tomorrow. So, I will close with two words – status quo.
The people have spoken, and what they have said is that they voted for the incumbent. In the House, despite the leadership change that appears to be happening, less than ten percent of the seats changed hands. In the Senate, just over ten percent.
Status quo. When all the shouting is over, the retention rate for incumbents will be about what it always is. No great sea change. No new direction for the nation.
Look at New York. 29 House seats. 25 incumbents won. Two lost. Two open seats. Of the incumbents, four ran unopposed – all Democrats BTW. No real desire being shown here by New York voters for change.
The President will be admonished to work with the Democrats. People will demand that heads roll. Rumsfeld, Cheney, and more. There will be finger pointing and “I told you so’s”.
The reality is that little has changed. The voters, in great and heartwarming numbers, have told us that they prefer the people they currently have representing them in Congress.
We must continue to support our troops in their, and our, fight in the War on Terror. We must continue to honor our alliances overseas, and continue to stand for liberty.
We must not give up the fight against pork. We must continue to demand that our employees in Congress give us 100%, their best.
And in 2008, maybe, just maybe, we will have built a larger base for real reform and real change.
