Blogging: Linkage
I received an e-mail request to add the logo and link for Central Command to this site. You will find it over on the left, just above the archives. CentCom is a good starting place for information about the War on Terror. I don’t know whether we can credit Al Gore for it, but I have to say that there are a remarkable number of useful government web sites up now. I just wish information flowed just as well in the opposite direction to our government. How can I help with the recovery from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita? Two ways. First, give to charity, one run by your church, or to the Red Cross or Salvation Army. Give what you can, and a dollar more. Secondly, participate in the Pork Busters project. Katrina: Old Media Fails
Hugh Hewlitt says it best: Everything that American media could throw at a story, it threw at New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. No expense was spared. All hands were on deck. And yet not one news organization produced anything like complete coverage of the events unfolding inside the city’s convention center or the Superdome. Horrific stories of murders and rapes spread like wildfire, reports of little girls with their throats slashed stunned Americans, and hysteria gripped many in the MSM. Weeks later the Los Angeles Times and others began to examine the collapse of the media’s own levees that traditionally hold back rumor and urban myth. Given this failure to capture the true story in New Orleans even with all of the combined resources of all the MSM working around … Read entire article »

Musings: Word Play
How this for a wack job? I’m thinking, something I try to do regularily, and I see a box. On the box is the French phrase for tomato ketchup. It dawns on me that the French are actually saying ketchup with tomato. Odd, I think. Then I realize that in English, the word tomato is used as an adjective. Hmmmm… pickle relish. Pickle is an adjective. Hey, I’m sick. What do you expect from me? I see the doc next week and find out when I can get back to work without busting a gut or contaminating the world. How can I help with the recovery from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita? Two ways. First, give to charity, one run by your church, or to the Red Cross or Salvation Army. Recovery: Hurricane Aid
How can I help with the recovery from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita? Two ways. First, give to charity, one run by your church, or to the Red Cross or Salvation Army. Give what you can, and a dollar more. Secondly, participate in the Pork Busters project. This project is an effort by bloggers to identify programs and grants in the Federal budget that can be cut to help pay for hurricane relief. The link at the logo will take you to a variety of pages detailing what is being done. It’s important to follow up with your congressman and Senators, more than once, and to make Pork Busting a priority. Simply freezing descretionary spending for two years would go a long way to both pay for the recovery and to … Read entire article »

Hurricane: Fuel Situation
Shell Shell Oil Company and Motiva Enterprises LLC are reporting that greater than 1.8 million gallons of fuel have been shipped to gasoline stations across the greater Houston area and strategic locations along major return routes. As of approximately 6 p.m. CDT Sunday, Sept. 25, Shell and Motiva had shipped 201 tank loads with plans to deliver another 40 tanker loads of fuel by midnight tonight. The addition of six company-operated tankers were added this morning to support distribution operations. Additional tankers provided by wholesalers and contractors were also supporting the companies’ fuel supply efforts. Both the North Houston and Pasadena terminals are fully operational and servicing the area. In addition to prioritizing fuel supply in the immediately affected areas and along return routes from Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, Shell … Read entire article »

Heroes: From the Camps
From Hitler’s death camps to “Frozen Chosen”. I saw this before I got sick and it moved me. Google up some additional information on this extraordinary man, a true hero. America is fortunate that he chose our nation to live in. Mudville Gazette For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty: Corporal Tibor Rubin distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism during the period from July 23, 1950, to April 20, 1953, while serving as a rifleman with Company I, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the Republic of Korea. While his unit was retreating to the Pusan Perimeter, Corporal Rubin was assigned to stay behind to keep open the vital Taegu-Pusan Road link used by his withdrawing unit. During the ensuing battle, overwhelming … Read entire article »
Hamas Gets Bombed
As I have blogged before, Hamas is the Arab group that vows to drive all Jews from the land they call Palestine. They hate Jews, Masons, Lions Clubs and the Rotary, in no particular order. So, I smiled, just a little, at this. AP via Yahoo A pickup truck carrying masked militants and two homemade rockets blew up at a Hamas rally Friday, killing at least 10 Palestinians and wounding 85, hospital doctors said. Hamas blamed Israel, but the Israeli military denied involvement and the Palestinian Interior Ministry said the blast was set off by the mishandling of explosives. Ten of the wounded were in serious condition, hospital doctors said. The rally was held in the Jebaliya refugee camp, one of the last military-style parades before a ban on flaunting weapons in public … Read entire article »

Blogging: Lessons Learned in the Hospital
One dose of Vicodan will not relieve a caffine withdrawal headache but it will make you not care quite so much. Two will make you not care about anything, and the headache will go away. God bless nurses. I will never say a bad thing about them again. They have to deal with the gross and disgusting, including me, for hours on end. As an EMT, I get to dump the gross and disgusting off at the hospital. One of the patient care techs was a guy called “Ting”. From the Congo, he came to America for a better life. He was very surprised that I knew anything about his homeland. He should be a Senator or Congressman. You can spell “Nicky” “Nicci” and “Melanie” Malanie”. Did I mention God bless nurses? I’d still … Read entire article »

Torture: To Mark Foxwell
September 27th, 2005 | Comments Off
I received the following letter. I have not changed anything but the word wrapping since it came through very poorly formatted. Not the writer’s fault, an Internet glitch. A recurring theme in your commentary on Skippy, Chuck, is your smug confidence in the integrity and thoroughness of the military’s internal self-policing. You dismiss the possibility that huge and ongoing violations of the declared policies of the military can go on, and when the military courts find only a few wrongdoers on a minor scale, and wind up punishing very few people, very lightly except for those of the lowest rank, with little likely effect on the alleged abuses, and in fact promotes the majority of the high command individuals involved in the scandals–well, to you that is proof that only those … Read entire article »
