Tsunami: THE STINGY LIST now current
Look over on the left. $831,427,479. Americans just keep on giving for tsunami relief. My company wrote a check today, modest compared to many but our $8 an hour employees gave what they could and we matched it all. Please don’t forget your local charities. Lots of folks right outside your door also need help. From fire companies and ambulance corps to the United Way or Salvation Army. Please, please don’t forget to set aside a dollar for your friends and neighbors, too. … Read entire article »

Death on the Highway Part 2
I previously posted about this accident here. While on ambulance duty yesterday, I was joined by a number of other members of the corps for coffee and chatter. Our main topic was this accident. Until I opened the morning paper today, however, I had no clear concept of what had happened to the bus. I have taken down the original post on this from earlier, in favor of what I shall now present. If you will notice the bottom photo, of a similar bus type, I have placed a black square over the portion of the bus impacted by the trailer. This is actually a far worse impact than we had speculated. Looking at the R News photo, it would appear that the bus was sliced down the center. The D and … Read entire article »

Death on the Highway
Yesterday, about 4:30 p.m., there was a terrible accident on I390 about 45 minutes south of Rochester. A bus rearended a parked tractor trailer. Four are reported dead at this time. Photos taken by a nearby resident show that the bus is nearly split in half lengthwise. R News: A Coach Canada bus collided with a tractor-trailer Saturday afternoon on Route 390 near Geneseo, Livingston County, resulting in four deaths and four critical injuries. The accident occurred just after 4:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of 390 near Groveland Rd. Police say the dead are a father, his son, a woman passenger and the driver of the tractor-trailer. The bus apparently rear-ended the tractor-trailer and split in half as a result of the collision. The tractor-trailer had been parked on the side … Read entire article »

Tsunami: Hypocrites
In the New Testament, Jesus tells a parable about the value of charity. A widow gives of her need, and a rich man from his surplus, and Jesus poses the question of which is more valuable. Princess Diana was a charitable person. Yet, I always had to note that she could afford to be. She was wealthy enough that she could do whatever she wanted with her time. That she chose to perform charitable works is laudable. She could afford to. She did not need to work, nor to worry. There’s a young man in my ambulance corps, making about $9 an hour at his job, working nights. He’s chosen to run duty during the days, and is logging nearly 100 hours a month. Did Diana, Princess of Wales ever go without sleep … Read entire article »

Tsunami: THE STINGY LIST Now Updated
How does $786,747,969.55 sound? That’s what the total contributions by Americans, individuals, groups and companies, adds up to as of this update. One billion dollars is within striking distance. Imagine that; one billion dollars from the pockets of Americans to assist people half a planet away, who we have reason to believe don’t like Americans very much. I hope Mr. Egeland can get the right spices, because he should be eating his words. I’ve been able to find numbers from the Sunday collections of 21 of the 178 Roman Catholic Dioceses in the United States. $5,968,493 in donations that were put in the collection basket. Money from the wallets of ordinary Americans. Hollywood, to no one’s surprise, remains silent. … Read entire article »

Tsunami: Marines Deliver
USMC The 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) recently started focusing its humanitarian aid effort in Indonesia during Operation Unified Assistance by delivering tons of supplies to a local hospital and refugee camp here. For the last week and a half, two Landing Craft Air Cushioned or LCACs depart the USS Bonhomme Richard each morning and head ashore filled with critical supplies and the equipment necessary to distribute it throughout the nearly devastated city. While LCACs hover out of the ship’s well deck, helicopters filled with Marines and Sailors also take off from the BHR headed to Meulaboh. The helos are set to distribute supplies while Navy Corpsmen on board provide medical aid at the local hospital. The helos touch down about 15 minutes later and radio operators immediately establish communications … Read entire article »

Iraq: Courage
January 31st, 2005 | Comments Off
I talk a lot in this blog about bravery and courage. I see it in our nation’s firefighters, EMT’s and police officers. I see it in the young men and women guarding our freedom in the military at home and overseas. And yet, I am shamed, shamed, because the people of Iraq have shown courage beyond that which anyone could have expected of them. The act of voting, which we take for granted, was a threat to their lives, and a majority of Iraqis stood up and took that risk. The silence from many in America is overwhelming. The left has no answer for this bravery. Yet again they are struck dumb by the willingness of people they routinely dismiss as unable to comprehend our values to accept that freedom, that … Read entire article »
