Cat Blogging the French

It occurred to me that our cat, Merlin, actually had the perfect opinon of the French: It would appear that the French are yellow pussies who will roll over on their backs and spread their legs for just about anyone. But, that’s just his opinion, and he’s a cat… … Read entire article »

Word from PG

Got an e-mail from PG in the wilds of Colorado. It’s a horrific tale of knee deep snows, falling off mountains, carrying heavy packs above raging mountain streams. And marmots. Which turn out to be woodchucks. Groundhogs. Big, fat rodents. PG has fallen in love with the yellow-bellied marmot, Marmota flaviventris, which loosely translated means smelly big rodent. I do find this aspect of marmots something to admire: Yellow-bellied marmots have a “harem-polygynous” social system whereby a male defends and mates with one or more females in a subalpine meadow. Yellow-bellied marmots chuck, whistle, and trill when alarmed by predators; only the whistles and trills are loud alarm calls. Mmmmmm… harems. and Chuck… … Read entire article »

Should Liberals Vote for Kerry?

As a liberal, should you vote for John Kerry? I’m glad you asked. John Kerry has been a politician all his life. He spent a couple of the years immediately after Vietnam in the practice of law, but only because he lost an election. Kerry is the insider’s insider. To use the rhetoric of my youth, he is THE MAN. Do you think you can vote for a man who has spent his life in the institutions that you want reformed? John Kerry comes from a life of wealth and privilege. A Swiss boarding school, Ivy League, millions of dollars in assets. Not exactly representative of a man of the people. The great issue of the day is the war in Iraq. Kerry voted in 1998 and in 2002 to support this war. Yet, … Read entire article »

When the Wives Speak

I’m of two minds about having candidates’ wives speak at conventions. No offense to Teresa or to Laura Bush but we ARE voting on their husbands. I suppose if a candidate had a wife similar to, say, Courtney Love, it might affect my vote since I think it would speak to a character flaw, poor judgment. BJ’s explanation, that we’re getting two for the price of one [which turned out to be oddly pertinent to Monica and that whole situation] really is a fallacy. I’m not sure I want a President’s spouse having a great deal of influence over him. It again speaks to a character flaw in the President, weak willed. And, such speeches do tend to invite comparison to the candidate. There are those, I’m sure, who would say … Read entire article »

Fearless Predictions

Bill Quick makes the following predictions: 1. The Easter Kerry will get no more than a four-point “Bunny Hop” in the polls coming out of the Con-vention. 2. Islamofascists will pull off some sort of atrocity in Athens, and forcibly remind Americans of who the real enemy is. More Americans, of course, will be paying attention to the Olympics than the political campaign, so the attack will be doubly shocking. It will also signal the final death knell for the Kerry campaign as America at last gets serious, and decides it needs a serious President, not a waffling lightweight leftist. 3. The Official Prediction: Bush 58%, Kerry 42 % of the two-party vote. 4. Daschle defeated. 5. By the end of the year, in a flood of recriminations, the … Read entire article »

Blame the Liberation

The folks in this story try valiantly to blame the Liberation of Iraq for an increase in gun deaths, but their own data puts the lie to it. The Star GENEVA (AP) ‘ The huge numbers of small arms left behind by Iraq’s armed forces after the fall of Saddam Hussein could cause instability in the Middle East for years to come, according to a study published today. “Millions of firearms suddenly flooded a chaotic social landscape,” the 335-page Small Arms Survey said. The number of murders using firearms in Baghdad rose dramatically and “the violence became a major barrier to the restoration of legitimate authority.” The Iraqi people currently control an estimated seven to eight million firearms, although the actual number could be much higher, the study said. This makes Iraq “highly but … Read entire article »

FEED A KITTY: THE LOLLYPOP FARM CAMPAIGN

Tomorrow is the last day I bleg [blog beg]. I turn 49. In order to celebrate this day, and to provide an alternative for those who might not want to fund Andrew Sullivan’s blog, I have suggested that readers donate a small amount to Lollypop Farm, the Monroe County Human Society. I have set up a web page with all sorts of blegging on it, including the stories of the three cats we have that Lollypop Farm rescued and allowed us to adopt. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll plotz. Hopefully, you’ll also donate. … Read entire article »

Comparing Conventions

I’ve been thinking about the upcoming Republican convention, versus the Democratic one going on now. I keep hearing Crocodile Dundee say “You call that a convention? THIS is a convention!” Three words. New York City. The ultimate party town. It’s what Vegas wants to be when it grows up. I believe the Republicans are going to show their opponents what a convention really looks like. They’re going to make the doings in Boston look like a 4H convention. I’m just saying, ya know. … Read entire article »
