Maher Arar, Terrorist?
National Post “This guy is not a virgin,” said a senior Canadian intelligence source, speaking on background. “There is more than meets the eye here.” Officials say Prime Minister Paul Martin has been extensively briefed on Arar’s activities abroad and in Canada, suggesting this is why the government backed off holding a full-scale public inquiry into his arrest and deportation to Syria by American authorities. Martin has access to a “minute-by-minute, day-by-day” file on Arar including evidence that the RCMP — while it shared information on Arar with the U.S. — did not encourage the Americans to deport him to Syria in October 2002. Officials say the RCMP had six officers at Montreal’s Dorval Airport on Sept. 27, 2002, waiting for Arar’s return from Tunisia through JFK Airport. But U.S. authorities arrested him … Read entire article »

Christmas Wishes
In the spirit of the season, I wave my magic wand, and give my fellow bloggers their heart’s desire: Glenn Reynolds is appointed to fill a vacancy in the Federal Ninth Circuit. In his first meeting with his fellow jurists, he is so persuasive he reverses the overwhelming liberal activist trend of the court and it becomes the most strict constructionist circuit in the country. The world realizes, as I do, that pregnant women are beautiful and sexy. Yvonne, of Aged and Confused, immediately replaces J-Lo as the top Latina sex symbol in America. Greg wins the Westminster Dog Show with his Lacey. Juliette of baldilocks is hired as Pentagon spokesperson. On the first day she tells correspondents to “talk to the hand”. Chief Wiggles is elected mayor of Baghdad after children are allowed to … Read entire article »

SARS: Back in 2003?
No, not really. As I read the story, this is a researcher who got sloppy in the lab. He could still generate an outbreak but this is not SARS in the “wild”, just stupidity. AGAIN! Hard to understand the constant carelessness on the part of people working with this illness. SFgate Two colleagues who had close contact with Taiwan’s SARS-infected scientist are now in the United States, a health official said Thursday, as about 90 people in two countries were placed in quarantine. Singapore has ordered about 70 people to stay in isolation as a precaution, as were 22 people in Taiwan. Only the scientist has so far shown signs of the disease. The man’s colleagues went to Singapore with the researcher on Dec. 7 and later traveled to the United States, said Shih … Read entire article »
One Man Makes a Difference
Army Sgt. Paul Smith BAGHDAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Iraq — The Republican Guard complex adjacent to the airport seemed the ideal place for a prison: high stone walls surrounding a grassy courtyard. There was a guard tower, high enough so the American soldiers could monitor their Iraqi prisoners of war. Building the prison was assigned to Bravo company of the 11th Engineer Battalion, attached to the 2-7 Infantry. It was Friday morning, the first day of the 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment’s occupation of Saddam Hussein’s airport. They needed the space quickly. A tank company had already captured prisoners of war, while securing the perimeter on the eastern side of the airport. Sgt. 1st Class Paul Smith readied his engineer squad to begin knocking down walls. He was a meticulous soldier who always wanted things … Read entire article »

WMD in America
This is typical of the plots that we are constantly seeing in the US, on-going terrorist threats that the media ignore. CBS 11 Nov 26, 2003 3:30 pm US/Central By Robert Riggs With Investigative Producer Todd Bensman Federal authorities this year mounted one of the most extensive investigations of domestic terrorism since the Oklahoma City bombing, CBS 11 has learned. Three people linked to white supremacist and anti-government groups are in custody. At least one weapon of mass destruction – a sodium cyanide bomb capable of delivering a deadly gas cloud – has been seized in the Tyler area. Investigators have seized at least 100 other bombs, bomb components, machine guns, 500,000 rounds of ammunition and chemical agents. But the government also found some chilling personal documents indicating that unknown co-conspirators may still be free … Read entire article »

Makers of Body Armor Boost Production
Washington Post The Army’s rush to overcome shortages of body armor and armored Humvees in Iraq is sparking a mini-boom for manufacturers of the equipment. Body-armor manufacturers are increasing output to 25,000 vests a month from 3,300. An Ohio-based subsidiary of Armor Holdings Inc. — the military’s only maker of armored Humvees — is ramping up to 24-hour production in an effort to turn out 220 vehicles a month within six months. It currently produces 80 a month. The Army initially provided body armor only to infantry and combat troops. Now it wants to outfit everyone on the ground in Iraq. In the past few months, Ceradyne Inc. of Costa Mesa, Calif., has spent $2 million to increase production of the ceramic plates used in vests to 14,000 a month from 9,000. Each … Read entire article »

Military Body Armor in Iraq
Saving Lives With Ceramic Armor ‘The Interceptor Body Armor system was the first new armor that the Marine Corps and Army have had since Vietnam in the 1960s. Because it’s B4C (and, in some cases, SiC) instead of aluminum oxide, it’s much lighter. That’s the justification for the high price, and the government is more than willing to pay that price because they’re beginning to understand the impact of weight on a soldier in the field,’ said Richard Palicka, president of Cercom. The performance of B4C and SiC materials was also improved through the ManTech effort, increasing the IBA’s ability to protect soldiers’ lives. ‘Multi-hit protection has been the real Achilles heel of ceramic because of its fracture behavior. We can’t eliminate this behavior, because it’s actually a key energy-absorbing process. … Read entire article »

Random Thoughts
Has there ever been a President whose administration was able to concentrate properly on both domestic and foreign policy issues? Or, concentrate on all regions of the world, not just the really hot spots? Just wondering. The Bush Administration bothers me on these issues, but I’m at a loss to say if anyone did it better. It seems to me that the system is set up for neglect. BureaucRATS run everything, in reality, and most of the appointed officials just let them do their thing. AIDS: I said about this to a friend on IM yesterday: This may be the foreign policy crisis of the next decade. The chaos that is going to ensue as entire nations in Africa and Asia continue to lose their adults in record numbers to the … Read entire article »
