Bad Call
So I EMT Saturday and not a thing all day. Usually it’s the busiest day. About three pm we wander over to the fireman’s carnival and sit at the ambulance corps’s tent. Watching the crowd, gossiping, and making catty remarks about how thirteen year old girls dress in public. Got myself a white hot and some fried dough. 4 pm it all changed. We get toned out. Some guy hanged himself. We sprint to the ambulance. Run red clear across town. Fire and police are there. The guy is down and they have oxygen on him. Lousy sounding breathing, slow and raspy. Large abrasion circling the neck. Cut to finish. In Emergency Department, still breathing. Many, many people working on him. I’m all hot and sweaty and frazzled. Paramedic was super. Fire … Read entire article »

Warm Butt
OK, so I felt the little boys crawl into bed last night. When I woke up about 6 am, I only had one on my right side. I checked the left to find Patches all stretched out and a little boy kitty draped over her butt. This obviously occurred when she was asleep, since she only tolerates the kittens. And this happy state of affairs lasted until she woke up, and became indignant. Forgetting, of course, how nice and warm and comfy her butt had been all night. I’d like to see this continue, the older two girls could use a sleeping companion to help keep them warm {they’re 12 {Patches} and 15 {Smokie}} Had to fish one of the boys nearly out of the toilet bowl last night. I guess I’ll have … Read entire article »

Kittens
OK, for the next several weeks, I’ll be boring new daddy, relating all sorts of kitten stuff. With four adult cats, we faced the food issue as we went to work this morning leaving them all unsupervised for the first time. The adults prefer kitten food, and as will happen with you and I, the rich kitten food doesn’t like them. So… The kittens were well fed this morning with their food. The usual plate of dry adult food was left down in the normal spot. The wet food was put on a table about 5 times the length of the kittens, but where we knew that the adults could leap to. Once shown, however, apparently kittens can leap five times their length straight up. Who’d a thunk it? Our plan, if it … Read entire article »

The Cattery Expands
We fell off the wagon July 3. Lollypop Farm called, because I had put in a request to be notifed about any orange kitties. They had some, and after some debate we went over there. Prolonged viewing of many cats and debate… and we came home with two brothers, Arthur and Merlin. Just over two months old and neutered. The four original cats are adapting… well, no one has died yet, although I may have a permanent scar from our male, who caught my face good when I was trying to settle him down. Actually, it’s not bad. The old lady is tolerant, Patches is sorta tolerant as long as we reassure her. Shadow, the male, is dumbfounded that his best rage screams don’t seem to faze the kittens, and Miss … Read entire article »

Patriotism
July 3rd, 2002 | Comments Off
Since the Fourth is upon us, I’d like to say a few words about patriotism. First, who am I? I am a conservative Roman Catholic, with strong libertarian and anarchistic beliefs. A mix, who believe in right and wrong, black and white, good and evil. I’m not bothered that people criticize our country and our government. The beauty of America is that they can do so. I’m not bothered that rich, pampered actors feel that the country who made them who they are doesn’t measure up to their standards. They have that right. There has never been a country like the United States. We are an unparalleled mixture of ethnic groups and races and religions and beliefs, and there is room for more. We have built the greatest economic and political power the … Read entire article »
